  • Reasonably priced TFT

Is there a such thing as a reasonably priced 16 or 18bit TFT? I'd like an 8.4, but a 6.4 would be OK too. Everything i've seen has been at least $330 and that's w/o a controller.

I've searched through the archives and found a lot of information about the TFT/Controller/Touch combo sold by Denis Kaye on ebay (The LQ9D-166 or LQ9D-161). It seems like everyone agrees that it's a decent TFT, but some say that 12 bit is not enough colors for watching video.

How bad is 12bit for video?

Does andyone know how many nits the LQ9D-166 or LQ9D-161 is? From the datasheet it looked like it was only 70 and I've read to get at least 200 for a vehicle application.

    Here is the DenisK combo:

What about some of these laptop pulled TFTs:

I can't find data sheets on any of them. the price is right, but are they worth anything?

anything vga is gonna run you around 300ish. I just use an 6 inch rca lcd and love it. It can be a bit hard to see the windows fonts but if you run winamp in double size mode (ctrl+d) and increase the font on the playlist you can read it just fine. My rca lcd was on the expensive side cause it came with a fm modulator and a TV tuner built into another box to go right into the card. I got that on ebay for 250 i think. It was a good deal for me. I'm very happy with my rca lcd. As of now i have no need for a vga. My lcd plays dvd's just great and does everything i need it to do.

If i use a gps, then i might run into a problem but for now i see now problems.

16/18 Bit?? Are you referring to VGA/Composite lcds? 16bit is the color depth, and as far as i know 18bit refers to the lcd data input. And 6.4 vga will be far more expensive than 8.4... mainly because who on earth would need a 6.4" VGA screen... they sell very few, so prices remain high.

You can try ebay for a better price, they sell some used 10.4's for 200-300. But you wont find a cheaper way to do new 8.4/6.4" VGA with controller for less than ~$400.

How bad is 12bit for video?
12 Bit is **** for movies, dvd. Whats the point in getting a ****ty quality VGA screen when u can get a good quality Composite screen? The purpose of going VGA is to get better quality... going with 12-bit defeats that goal.

You've already answered that question. And 70nits is a joke for brightness... these must be ancient *** screens intended to be used in pitch dark.

If $500 vga screens are out of your budget, consider a good quality video screen... they're great for movies and decent on desktop.

Ok I found a 10.4" sharp model LQ104V1DG11 for a very reasonable price. It looks like it's the perfect screen for my aplication. It's 18 bit and 350 nits.

        Here's the data sheet:
        http://sharp-world.com/products/devi...q104v1dg11.pdf

I've found the inverter and power cable for ~$45 (USD) from here:
        http://www.milesie.co.uk/shop/asp/pr...sp?product=352

The problem is I can't find a good deal on a controller.

Do I have to get an analog-tft controller like this:
        http://www.milesie.co.uk/asp/product...?ProductID=273

or can I get a digital pci controller card like this:
        http://www.milesie.co.uk/asp/product...?ProductID=238
        or this:
        http://www.milesie.co.uk/asp/product...p?ProductID=26

        Thanks for the help,
        Jeff

finding a raw lcd that takes in LVDS, TTL signals at low prices was never the issue...

getting a controller for it has...

raw lcd's can be between $70-200 depending on size, brand, nits. The controller will add $200 to that price.

Digitalview sells controllers, check those out.

Earthlcd.com also sells the ADC controller... call them up too.
