  • Ide Wire Extension - Xbox

    HI,

im doing an Xbox install and i would really like to extend the IDE wire to relocate the DVD drive in the dash.

I have read all over the place in here about people trying and so forth.

I would like to know whos done it and exactly how long and how?!

Ive heard that you can swith the HDD and DVD drive on the oem ide cable so i was thinking of making a longer one! OR making a male - female long ide cable to attach to the oem slave position that the dvd drive is at already.

ive searched like crasy and ive searched xbox forums as well..
    thanks,
    Jason

I have heard of successes with using cat5 cable. It involves a bunch of soldering, and if you make sure each twisted pair has a ground in it (Half the wires in IDE cables are ground anyway) you should be o.k. As for length, I have seen a couple of feet, but never done it myself. Better to just get an external like USB if you can (I don't know enough obout the XBOX to know if that is possible)

        How much time you got!?

I'm about to attept this just for the hell of it; chop an IDE ribbon cable in half and splice in CAT5. I want to put my cd rom drive up front but it's about 5 ft from the computer. If it work, fine; if not, i'll go USB.

You'll have to wait 'till after the weekend before i can post results tho'

Just making sure you know, that IDE cables above 36" in length become sketchy. This causes data corruption, so more read tries are required meaning it takes longer to get the same information. So it will be slower the longer the cable is, and the more interferance around it.
