  • Taking the Plunge

I hope I'm posting in the right place this time cos I got dinged already.

Okay, I have been viewing and reviewing this forum, off and on, for about 3 months now, and I think it's time to take the plunge.

I would appreciate it if you guys could help with inputs on my ideas.

I have been torn on choosing a mobo and CPU for the longest time, simply because of power issues and upgradeability. But since this is my first project I have decided to dive into the ocean and make mistakes where necessary because it's all a learning curve. (Help me shorten it if you can, pleae. LOL)

I have decided to choose between the MII 10k, MII 12k, or a Jetway. (This is solely because I'm hoping to successfully build the whole system in my car's double DIN space.
I measured the depth and it's exactly 17cm, but that it with the metal that holds the stoc radio behind still in place. I plan to either cut this metal, or bend it out of the way. I hope not to do too much damage.

Meanwhile, with that said, an m2-atx is in my psu plans. I'm on standby for a used 7" xenarc. If not I'm going with a 7" lilli.

    Let me se, what else?

A power supply. If you are going the jetway route, then don't get the M2 or M1 because there have been issues. I have heard that the issues have been sorted out with the newer versions, but I wouldn't trust it.

    Harddrive.

    RAM.

    Good wires.

    Amp for speakers.

So there goes that for screen, mobo, and enclosure choice.

Of course I intend to get a min of 512mb RAM. I need help here. COuld someone point me in the right direction for the "type" of RAM that these VIA mobos require? I'd appreciate it.

I'm not so torn on HDD choice.

WHat front end works best with the VIA combo?

Shoot! I'm so full of some questions, but I'll wait to have these ones anwsered first before I continue.

I will take pics of my car interior to give you guys and idea of what I intend. It's okay to let me fall, but don't let me fall real hard that my vision will be blurred, pls.

Thanks for viewing and in advance for your insightful advice.

        WHAO! That was quick. LOL

Yeah, I'll get the HDD, RAM and good gauge wires. Now that leads me to another question.

I have searched the web to see how best to connect the Carpc to the amp for best sound since it may be a 6 channel sound mobo. I think I'm going to eliminate my HU altogether because I do not want to fab another location for it.
My biggest question with regards to this is "do I need a remote wire (like the one used with HUs) for the amp to come one and receive sound from my comp?

Hey 2k1Toaster, you seem to run hardware similar to what I may be putting to gether. How long have you had yours and what has been your biggest issues with the whole set up.

If you'd change anything what woud it be.

Just inquiring, so as to help me plan better. Thanx for leading. LOL

Notice my sig for how long I've had it in .

Not that long by any means compared to some others.

As for ram, with the via boards I have heard that Kingston RAM works best. I personally use PQI value ram because it is cheap and all low end systems I build use it.

Frontend, any. Streetdeck, RoadRunner, Centrafuge, MediaCar, anything. It all works fine, just stay away from highly flash intensive skins. I use RR.

As for remote wire, if you get any smart PSU like an opus or M1/M2 or DS-ATX there will be a remote amp wire.

My biggest issue was this weird attraction my CarPC had to me. Any time I got out of my car, it would freeze for some reason. Read about it here: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=91962

I think it was my harddrive. I just defragged and fixed the drive's errors and it stopped so it is good now.

What I would change... hmmm. That's a thinker... If I had the money, Xenarc or transflective screen. Maybe also getting an Opus instead of the M2. I hear lots of M2 horror stories and if mine goes, I don't want it to take my other stuff with it too which it seems to do.

That was a few lines of insight. Thanx a bunch.

I'll be shooting up some more questions as they pop up,

              Thanx again.

The screen I used is an "Ex-Audio", It is a cheapo eBay screen from HongKong. Came packaged from China and all manuals are chinese and japanese. Who needs manuals anyways?!

                        I too am a cheapo.

Basically there are only 2 screens for car use. Lilliput which is the cheap "walmart brand" and Xenarc which is the high quality. Xenarc is supposedly better quality and brighter. I like my Ex-Audio screen. It is a rebranded lilliput. So are TVView, and Super. Both lilliputs. Anything that is not a Xenarc, is a lilliput. The new lilliput design with the buttons on the side is exactly liek my Ex-Audio. With the side buttons, it is almost an exact fit for double din and I had no major modifications to my dash to jam it in there. I have had a few problems with it (Search for Ex-Audio and ye shall find).

1din motorized units will fail. Even a high priced one will fail. It is just a matter of when. So if going that route buy locally (North America only) so that repairs don't hav eyou ship a screen back to hongkong which both ways including customs will cost you more than buying a new screen.

It is a lilliput. It will work just like all the rest. $200 seems average. That is what I got mine for. One thing to look at might be the lilliput hack thread. The one where there is a button hack to make the screen auto turn on with a source being inputted. My screen has a standby mode which works for me. No idea about this screen. If you check that lilliput hack thread you will find people that say "make xxxx model yyy bought at store zzzz does/doesn't work with this".
