  • "The Zone"

after upgrading my motherboard and ram two weeks ago (km266+ddr), and then having windows bomb out on my last week and having to reinstall 98 from scratch, and a small bit of tweaking, my system has suddenly entered "the zone." Running a full install of 98, i just noticed that i now have music playing 30 seconds after turning the inverter on, when it was 45-50 before , and everything is running flawlessly. and the most amusing part is that the music starts playing so fast that the windows startup theme is still playing. im almost afraid to change anything now that everything is working so well (and of course, now it will break because im talking about it). anyone else have their carpc in "the zone"?

I had my carputer booting in around 25-30 seconds, I wasn't shutting it off, i had everything hooked up to the accessory line so the power just cut when i killed the ignition. This was working flawlessly for 2 months then i ruined it by "upgrading" to xp

I think I'm going to be ordering one of those opus power supplies.. those things are hella sexy with there auto on/auto off and all that. MpoD will make its next encarnation sometime mid october (my birthday is coming up oct 1
and I should be getting some components and capital to support my efforts : )

In the mean time I'll be setting everything up on my desk. I am going to go back to 98se or 98me maybe i'll dabble with 98lite. I'm going to try to concentrate on my interface... which is the most difficult part of it all I think.

I'm debating dropping down to 64mb ram to lower that number, I don't think I need anymore than that really.. It's not like I run multiple applications at once, or anything that is ram intensive.

heh, the only computer in my house or car with less than 256mb of ram is a p2 233 with 192mb. i just habbitually buy big ram. and im going to ghost my current install before i go screwing with anything and knock it out of "the zone" (note, before the hardware and software upgrades, i had no end of random, intermitent problems with my car pc).

I ghost EVERY one of my PCs at work and at home. It is so simple, compression is decent 2:1 and cds are so CHEAP! Come on you can't tell me your time isnt worth 1-2 cds. You don't have to store all your mp3s but at least windows/setup/main stuff. Norton Ghost is a wicked timesaver. Email me if you need it, I have about 100 lisenses from work. If not there is always Kazaa.... but then again thats bad...

EPIA ME6000 dont really run win98 too well, and i was a tired and old favourite of win98. But I tried XP on it and DAMN its stable. It will just take time I reckon and XP will be the next favourite of the mircosoft OS's. Only operating system ive seen yet that actually comes out of standby correctly everytime.

upon coming out of standby, (draws 190mA) to start playing mp3's, 8 seconds!

Tweak it and it shuts down in 6!

I switched from windows 2000 to windows xp and now I have music playing in 50 seconds from power on. I just made a full playlist and threw it in the startup folder. I have winamp set to random. Its easier then farting around scrolling through playlists looking for something to play. I just keep hittin next till soemthing good comes on.

yeah i used to do that too. You get tired of the same list about a month or so down the track and find youself getting tired of clicking..."next....next....next..."

Heh, the funiest thing about this post resurfacing is that as soon as the weather got cold, I ended up scrapping the system I mentioned in this thread, as the mobo didn't like booting when it was below freezing. And you just need a good playlist, and when you find yourself hitting next next next, its time to refresh the music in that list.
