  • usb car charger powered hub?

not sure if this has yet been considered, but, would it be possible to use a standard 1 amp output "USB car charger", the kind which plugs into a cig lighter socket to charge phones and blackberries, to run a powered hub? wouldnt this be the cheapest and simplest way to construct a carputer powered hub?? or will this not work for some reason?

im looking to construct a low cost carputer hub is why... to provide extra juice to power a 1 watt USB wifi card and a USB harddrive...

or have i been smokin too much?

I did the same. Although I didn't think about using multiple to gain more amps. Did you daisy chain them one into the other into another or just parallel into one main out line

parallel to one output line, end cut off of the ac brick, the 5amp unit plugs into a 10 port hub and all accessories have their required voltage SNO

on the same tip: you know how USB harddrive enclosures and high powered USB wifi cards come with a 2 USB connection because they draw so much power? well, what if you connected the power one straight into one of these USB auto chargers?(and used a non-powered USB hub for the other (data) USB connection) think it would work? (((becuase then i could get a simple 4 USB hub and it would still have 2 ports remaining... and i wouldnt have to worry about a powered hub, nor chopping and splicing wires)))

the reason behind 2 plugs for each device is because they are drawing more than the 500ma each usb port can provide so you will need to go with 7 port hub and maybe only give it 2 amp power and hope your other devices only draw minimal power hope that helps SNO

but what if you plugged the one which only draws power from the device directly into one of these USB chargers... with the other wire into the hub?? would it work?

your missing the point here, they have 2 usb outlets to get the power they require 1 end of the cable is not just for data and the other for power they are both for power and data combined, each usb port only provides 500ma and the hard drive or the wifi needs more that the 1 usb port can provide so unless you have a powered hub plugging 1 cable into your lighter usb charger and 1 into hub will not work. the hub needs to be powered as well then you could get away with 1 cable going to usb port and other into cig charger. i just dont see the point buy a 7 port hub and give it 2 or more amps and you should be fine with ports to spare SNO

Most devices though that have high power draw have their own external power abilities. Also when a 7 port hub supports only 2 amps, dont you also have to count the power draw from the main data port? So in saying that, more then 2 amps is techinically going to the hub.
