it all depends how much watts you are putting out. I have a 8AWG wire running to one of my amps, I touched it and it is heating up. That said crank your system up, then touch the wire. If its extremely HOT, need to upgrade to something bigger, if NOT you are set.
      What im curently listening to.

excellent rule of thumb, if the wire doesn get hot, its fine

I only have 40 amps running to my audio and I have 4 gauge that I'm using. That's what was suggested in the owner's manual for my amp and what was recommended by street wires website.

I've also been told that running too small of a power wire will greatly effect the performance of your amp. Thin wire will act like a bottleneck for the current that should be going to your system.

genreally its ok to just run your car system for an hour or so and see how hot the live wire gets buy general rule of thumb, always go larger. I think 4 gauge will do you go, I mean spend a few bucks just to be on the safe side.
                Mine needs to be updated.
