  • freeway driving with PC running, success

Tonight I took my dad to LAX, a 2 hour drive. We checked in and got him to the gate. On the way home I decided to fully use my PC the way I would have used when it's parked in the shop demoing. The result was very statisfying.
The test speed is between 65-80mph.
I've read lots of threads about harddrive CD drive damping. There's no need for that. My 3.5" hdd is mounted in the PC case. No foam, no springs, no rubber, just screwed to the pastic case. MP3 playing was fine, DivX movie was fine.
I've been using OBD-II scanning since I got my PC setup. Nothing new here but wanted to include the result as well. The digital dash worked perfectly.
Two things I havent really test out before were the DVD/CDRW drive and wireless internet.
I played audio CDs, DivX movies, DVD movies. All played smoothly with no freezes and pauses. I was a little scared about burning CDRs cuz I dont wanna waste any CDRs due to buffer underrun but tried it anyway. I burned 5 CDs at 20X (burner's max speed) at 70mph. Keep in mind, it's a 97 Tacoma truck. ALL burns were successful. SO to all of you out there who has CD burnners. It will handle the road bumps and viberations. My IDE cable is about 24 inches. Longer than that, the burner wont work. I used a 48" IDE cable and reading is still OK though.
I got on the internet using Sprint Vision. The traveling speed was 80MPH. I did a few speed test at www.dslreports.com The result was not as fast as the previous test done while the vehicle was parked. At freeway speed, the connection was 85D/109U, 29D/105U, 105D/95U, 80D/102U all kbps. standing still from the previous test was 120kbps download and 131kbps upload.
I hope this will give you guys some ideas how tolarable PC hardwares are for in car use.

        The DVD/CDRW drive is a Ricoh MP9200A 20X R,10X RW,40X R,12XDVD What's yours?
Edit: I just want to add that the internet connection during the test did hit the Sprint network's maximum speed at 16.5KB/S but not as often as it would while parked.

damn...why dont you keep your eyes on the road instead of burning *5* cd's while driving...? better have a quick hand to switch over to the obd2 when the cops pull you over...

I'm an excellent driver and very good at driving with my knee. Besides I got all the software setup before I even started driving. It's not any harder than to change CDs on your CD player. You hit eject take the CD out, put a new CD in and touch the LCD and it burns.
The USB serial hub is what it says, Keyspan USA49A. The serial relay control module is http://www.controlanything.com/cgi-b...oduct_Code=R85

On the burning cd's thing.. Did you burn & verify or just burn? A lot of drives will say they burn OK but vibration is a big big problem when burning. I have screwed up plenty of cd's moving a laptop around while burning. Even though the software said the burn worked, the laser has 'skipped the groove' when burning and this has led to bad reads. Buffer underrun is not a problem that happens to people any more with the advent of BURN-Proof, SmartBurn, etc., which any recorder above about 8x is going to support fully, but vibration is always going to be a showstopper since there's no way to either correct or detect it while doing the burn. You have to do a complete verify to even know it happened!

Gork, I've varified all the CDs I've burned during the trip. All came out ok. 2 audio CDs played fine, 2 DivX movies played fine and a CD with 7+hours of MP3 that im still checking. So far no errors at all.
                        Zootjeff, I used MS paint.
