Like this is what i want. I ahve a laptop. And i plug into it my webcam and ipod and who knows what else in the future into my usb ports, maybe even scanner later. However, i hate always having to have the wires there because i usually use my lap top on the couch. And i'd like to just set up the web cam and ipod soemplae else. (web cam is motorozed so i can control it to)

Do they make soemthing to do ti? Like bluetooth controoled? or anything??

    thanks

I think I understand what you want - You want to operate all your devices wirelessly.

There are a couple of problems here.

Problem #1: Bluetooth would be too slow. Being only about 723 kb/s, Bluetooth couldn't handle the data rate your iPod and motorised (Aussie spelling!) webcam would require - so an adaptor for WiFi or some derivative is necessary.

Problem #2: Separate Wi-Fi adaptors for each device would be expensive. A solution to this would be ...

Solution: A wireless USB hub. BUT -

Problem #3: - Up to now I have never heard of one, and a quick search hasn't yielded any either ... It's a good idea though, so if they aren't available yet I reckon they eventually will be.

As an aside, there are little wireless units, such as print servers like this one: http://www.axis.com/products/axis_office_basic_usb_w/ available, which operates on 802.11b or: http://www.qualitycables.com/523172.html The first is USB, the second parallel (useless to your cause methinks, I included it purely because it came up while searching ;o), they operate over a network, and it looks like they only handle one printer each ...

So, ideas: If you can find a wireless print server with USB ports, OR plug a USB hub into a single USB print server (like the first link), that might be the closest thing to a wireless USB hub. But then maybe it will only run USB printers and scanners off it!

Sorry I can't help more, perhaps somebody else knows of a way to get this done ... Or if wireless USB hubs ARE in fact available ...

There ya go, knew it must exist ...

I think jnusaira wants it for his home (ref couch - or a nice setup in the back of a van but I agree cheerio, I always opt for cable instead of WiFi, I can't stand a mouse that jumps around and doesn't do exactly what I tell it to do ... We need a flame-WiFi thread!
