  • Put project on hold or not.

I'd like to know what you all would do in my situation.

I've been slowly working on my car'puter for quite a while now. Haven't been making a lot of progress due to lack of funds. I got back from Iraq in late March. I will be going back in mid-January (approx. four months from now).

It doesn't make too much sense to go out of my way to spend a bunch of money on equipment that isn't going to be that good when I get back. Plus in a year from now, I will be able to get current top-of-the-line for a lot cheaper.

Should I put my project on hold until I return? What should I go ahead and buy any way (stuff that shouldn't need to be replaced upon returning)?

    Derek

well from what i see ya need, you dont have to much left to spend. Nothing would be really need to change when you get back. Perhaps the mobo but i wouldnt spend much on it. Get an old computer put it in your trunk.

Edit: be safe when ya leave

Financially, there is still a bunch more that needs to be purchased.

      OPUS: 200
      Mobo: 50
      CPU: 100
      Memory: 65
      Hub: 50
      WiFi: 50

Just with those estimates is roughly five hundred bucks. Not including USB and Video cables. I wish I had that much money laying around but at the moment I don't.

I imagine that AMD 64's will be cheaper when I get back but doubt the OPUS will power them. (Unless there is something better than the OPUS when I return). Also, harddrives will be larger and cheaper then too...

You don't need top of the line for a carputer. I got by with a Compaq Presaria 4840(PII 266 / 192 RAM). It did MP3, DVD, DivX, and GPS all very smoothly.

Opus may have their new 220w out by the time you get back. Anyway, things can only get cheaper...and if you have any money now you could earn interest on it while you're gone

Well, I do currently have my computer that is my server. It holds all my movies and music. I am toying with the idea of pulling the board, cpu, and memory outta there to throw in the car. Not about to put the harddrive in there, though. I will get another harddrive to put in the car. No way am I gonna risk 80GB worth of music with no backup.

I do have two power inverters that I could probably put to good temporary use. Can't really afford a $200 OPUS just yet.

Buy a laptop... use it in the car connected to the Lilli then take it away with you too. Run it off a $20 inverter for now and fix thiings up properly when you get back.

I've got a laptop at the moment. Was thinking about the same thing this weekend. But I dunno if I want to be transferring the laptop between the car and the house all the time. Dunno....

hmm...you know, sometimes i think that we survived perfectly with tapes, radio and now cds...is it that much desire in you to put a computer in your car...if u wnat to show off...well then thats different (you need to learn that computers in car dont make u cooler, its you and how you operate it <---lame , but anyways...if u can live with something simpler for now, why not same up some money. Money is easy to give away, unless you remember how hard you worked to earn it!

good luck in Iraq!!!Thank you for your sacrafices! some of us can not stoopt ot the challenge.

use the inverter you already have, they work fine just not like an opus.
get an older mobo+cpu+ram from ebay for under like $60, I get ****ed off when ppl's carputers are faster than my desktop anyhow lol.
the usb and wireless wont go down much in price over 6 months and the mobo/cpu have already lost most of what they will in depreciation, what do u need an athlon 64 for in a car anyhow?
