  • Run programs on hibernate/suspend and resume!

Hey, I thought I'd share this with people, since I have never seen a program that does this specifically...

A coworker of mine didn't have much to do this afternoon so he threw it together for me.

in suspend.ini you put the filenames (full path for stuff windows doesn't automatically recognize, like notepad) and it runs one program when suspending/hibernating, one when resuming.

works on XP on our work computers, no promises for anyone else.

Anyway, the general idea is you can use it for disabling/enabling your GPS if it doesn't like standby, or whatever else you want, so long as you can figure out some way to do it by the command line (perhaps use a macro recorder if it needs to be done via the gui)

              That program rocks.

I know you didn't write it, evandude, but would it be possible to get your coworker to make a couple of additions next time he, um, doesn't have much to do?

              - support for multiple applications (so i don't have to run an ugly batch file to issue multiple commands)
              - auto-minimize to SysTray on startup
              - longer command lines
              - the ability to use command lines with spaces in them

If it's not possible, then fine, this app is helpful enough. If it is possible, then that's even better. =)

Thanks again for posting this up.

Thanks for sharing. So how does this work? You open the little app, and leave it open? or? I only get a small window with two fields, one for notepad and another for command.

sorry for no replies, i forgot to subscribe to the thread.

justintime... yes, it just opens up a simple box with two lines.. one for what to run on standby/hibernate, and one with what to run on resume... you can put whatever you want in those boxes... full path would be required for anything windows doesn't automatically recognize.
and yes, you just leave it open.

well as for multiple apps, you can just have it launch a batch script that runs multiple apps and does whatever else you want. ugly, maybe, but it works at least.

                    I'll ask him about auto-minimize.

I would try putting the command line in quotation marks if you use spaces. I haven't tried it, but that's how you usually have to do it in the command prompt sometimes, so it seems like it might work for that as well.

he said he noticed a problem, that it will run the chosen standby program on standby the first time, but if you do standby again it won't run it. he said the RESUME program always worked fine... anyway, he claims to have taken care of it, i'll try to get a new version.

He said he doesn't want to spend lots of time on this thing, because he's got other personal programming projects he could be doing, but i bet he'd entertain some small upgrades to it on those days he's bored, so I'll see what I can do ;-)

Thanks evandude. Works for me, except for the issue you mentioend above. Please post new version when possible. I have not been able to find ANY util that does this except yours. And I looked for hours!

on friday he said he was about a half hour's work away from finishing a much better version. it includes minimizing to the system tray, fixing the little multiple standby glitch, and a more proper INI file which (I think) deals with spaces in filenames. may be other features, I don't know yet. so tomorrow I'll see if he's got anything more for everyone!

it really is amazing though... I am OK with C++, and I played with a little tutorial on windows API programming and from what he said, if I'd spent maybe a day or two finishing that tutorial, and did some quick browsing of the microsoft MSDN, I'd probably know enough to make this program myself. I was pretty surprised to realize that something like this (which previously seemed to be WAAAAY over my head, I assumed I'd need a couple more semesters of college computer science courses before I could even touch it) is really not that bad, if only I had a spare weekend to sit down and learn this stuff so I'm hoping I can find time for that... someday... would be nice to be able to whip up a cool program like this one in just a couple of hours, instead of trying to find someone to do it for me... I think if some more people did that, we'd have all sorts of cool little apps like this one.

ok now here's my golden question. How do i use this thing to disable/enable my pharos usb GPS. Devcon.exe doesnt appear to work as windows says it requires a restart to disable the device.

someone else will have to help you with that one... in my case i'm planning to enable/disable the GPS through the GPS software itself, with some form of macro, since it can be done with a simple keystroke. otherwise, I have no idea, never tried it.
