  • Anyone give me an approximate of the draw of reverse lights?

The draw in amps of reverse lights (white lights that come on when you reverse)

    Any ideas?
    Under an amp?

probably like 2 amps. Look it up for ur lights. 12volt* Xamp=watts. So if the lights use 24watts each or want not. that is 2 amp a piece.

Why are you asking? Some excellent project idea that you would like to share with the rest of us?

Nothing too exciting; its been done

Automatic video switching for a reverse camera
I have a 1n4001 diode and a 1amp spdt relay and I have the irking feeling that theyre going to go up in smoke

Ahh ok. I have a sneaky feeling you could be right on the "up in smoke" issue. But I could be wrong!!

A diode ? Why ? hook the relay's coil in // with the lights, that all No matter what amperage flows thru the light, a 12v Car relay will just suck 200mA more.
Now Galileo is real. Muhahahahaha :p

The small blue box is a pushbutton switch that carries 12v constant. When pressed it powers the coil. The diode stops the reverse lights from coming on (as far as I can tell, I already asked about this and people said it was fine but Im not expert)

are you trying to make it so the backup camera is activated by either the reverse lights coming on, or the pushbutton?

yes, the diode will prevent the pushbutton from turning on the reverse lights... I'm just trying to figure out what the purpose of the button is.

But why don't you just send that on-demand 12v to your vga box ? No need for a diode, the relay is open, no current will go back to the lights

Any diode will work and any 12V relay will work unless the relay is draw more amp than the diode and/or the reverse circuit. The reverse light and switch is driving the relay so that is not much of a draw to the existing reverse circuit.
You are fine with that 1N4001 and any standard automobile relay.

The standard reversing light is a 21w, it should be stamped on the base of the bulb, or in your user manual for the car.

                          1n4001 is fine btw

Do you drive a stick? It might be easier to install a momentary switch on the gear shift, I know guys that do this to engage different boost controllers in different gears.

I am plannong on wiring a 12V camera directly to the reverse light wiring. (I don't need push button override).

Is it OK to just tap into the wires, or do i need to take any precautions, such as adding other components in parallel/series etc?
