Nice program. best one i used, although some of the movies come out pixelated at the end .

although they won't be releasing any newer versions of it, i'm sure the old/current ones will do just fine all over the net .

This is ******* ridiculous... it is 100% legal to backup everything you own... thats why this makes no sense to me...

EDIT: It looks like they just stopped developing it, I'm not sure why they wouldn't host the program anymore, or offer an explanation... but I did some searching and thats the explanation I found.

          EDIT II: After further sluthing:

There has been some posts about the official DVD Shrink site being dead. Here's a summary of the facts:

          * The author of DVD Shrink has always stayed anonymous, only a few people know his real identity

          * The development of DVD Shrink has ended quite a long time ago, so it is now just a matter of how the last version of DVD Shrink will be distributed

          * The official DVD Shrink website was setup, with the permission of the author (after consultation with me), by the author of DVDaDVDr.com. It is this website that is down at the moment

          * Ironically, the website did not contain any direct download links to DVD Shrink, instead, it linked to other website that had the download

          * The website was shut down after an abuse/violations report sent to the web host of the website (an US webhost). As long as the official website is relocated to outside of the US, or preferably to a country without unfair digital copyright laws, then the official site will be back again

          * Much like how the official site is not directly affiliate with the author, the official DVD Shrink forum on this website is not affiliate directly with the author either, although he was a moderator and founder of the DVD Shrink sub-forum

          * The main function of DVD Shrink doesn't actually break any digital copyright laws, but it includes a built in DVD ripper/decrypter (that doesn't fully work anyway, especially with the latest copy protected DVDs). There are many commercial software that acts exactly like DVD Shrink, but does not have the ripping portion, and they can be legally sold in the US.

          * For now, you can download DVD Shrink from the following places:

DVD±R Digest (features foreign language versions, some based on an earlier version of DVD Shrink)
          mrbass.com
          Afterdawn

Actually, US copyright law does not provide that making backups of DVD movies is legal. You have to rely on a fair use argument, and that has not been tested in the courts under such facts.

As for apps like DVD Shrink and so forth, if they are capable of copying CSS-encrypted movies (like DVD Shrink can), they are in violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act ("DMCA"), which effectively trumps fair use under the rules in effect today.

Offhand, I don't think the movie studios have lost a case yet that was based on the DMCA. It's more a matter of whether they've gotten to particular defendants or not yet.

Personally, I agree that making a true backup copy seems a reasonable thing to be able to do. However, the current state of the law and technology have not quite overlapped enough yet to make that legally possible.

Oh, yeah, I don't doubt that it will come back. Actually, I think it's been seen on other sites, right? It's very hard to control that stuff (should one be inclined to do so in the first place, that is).

I've got it on several backup disks and on three different harddrives. One thing I don't wanna loose is good software. (That and my MP3 collection of 26 DVDs worth of music.)
Which reminds me... it's time for another backup.
