  • Confused, Should I make the leap to Carputer or Just an Aftermarket HU

I want navigation in my car and was going to go with the Avic-N2 but was wondering if the carputer is a better option. I want FM radio and don't want to loose it with a carputer.

You don't have to lose it.. You can still have a headunit.. maybe use an in-dash monitor (motorized or not).

first question you have to ask yourself. is do you have the time and patience to do a carputer? if not go with the avic. i know money isnt really an issue cus a carputer prolly ends up cheaper than an avic but its about fabbing and putting it together. some people love to do it and some like easy reliable ways and pay extra money. than decide from there. cuz you can do alot more with a carputer.

I was asking myself the same question about 4 months ago. I decidedto go with the car computer because it will do a lot more than the avic will and I can customize to do what I want.( and it is just COOL)

If you go with a computer do you want more of an "off the shelf solution" or build it yourself?

I think the car computer option can be done by anyone who is capable and motivated but expect to spend more time on the project without experience/knowledge in computer hardware, computer software and car stereo installation.

I am fairly capable and knowledgable(not compared to a lot of people on this site but compared to the average person). I have spent and continue to spend countless hours researching, finding parts, dash fabrication, software tweaking, etc.....of course I may just be dense or fanatical!

I don't want to scare you away from the car computer if I had to make the choice again I would go with the car computer!(wouldn't even consider anything else now)

However, If you are really busy and don't have the time to work on it, or would not enjoy the process of learning and getting it working you may want to consider the AVIC.

        Good Luck!!

p.s. take some time reading this site; Read the FAQ, look at "show your Projects" section and you will get an idea of what can be accomplished and what will be involved.

          My Thoughts...

As others have stated a car computer has a wider range of use than that of a stadard HU. I mean you have mp3's, nav, dvd, sat radio, normal radio, bluetooth usage, etc etc. Of course, I have no yet installed my car computer so I can vouch for all of it yet (installation hassles, me crying when my hard drive dies after taking my 4 runner through some fields), but I think I have made a good decision based on what I've seen so far. I really think I will get 800 plus dollars of use or more out of it. I get lost consistently in St. Louis, Chicago, or any other major city I go to. Usually I am alone and it is troublesome to pull off the interstate with cars whizzing by your mirrors at 80 mph. With Iguidance, MS streets, whatever the nav program you choose it can help you. I'm not going to say the directions are always the best, but even any kind of reference when in a situation of getting lost is great. On top of that dvd movies for when you are bored stuck waiting for someone in your car, internet if your near a wifi hotspot, or the overall cool factor.

It boils down to a time factor and a willingness to stare deep into the monitor through hours worth of forum reading to pick exactly what is right for you, or spend 20 minutes and push the buy button for the avic. It's all about what makes you happy, don't buy a car computer and decide you've wasted money on something you don't really use. At the same time, don't buy the avic and realize you didn't get all the functionality you wanted.

Thanks Guys, knowledge about computer hardware isn't a problem, I built my last two desktops so I would say I am knowledgeable especially about computer hardware (programming is another thing, lol) Anyway, I am interested in a motorized in dash display, what options do I have for FM radio a PCI Tuner or do they make any good usb ones? Also I would like a rear view video cam, but with a carputer I doubt I can get the screen to come on in reverse, or is their a way? Also where do you guys usally mount the computer, I am guessing trunk?

get a xenarc screen it automatically switches to video source when power is supplied to it. so wire your cam to reverse lights and input it on a xenarc. when you reverse it automatically switches to the cam. when you put it in drive it goes back to the vga computer.
