  • I just started making my own frontend, please critique it

The only thing I have to get 'working' now is integrating the apps into my program (i have an excellent idea on moving it as a child into my app so the app will never loose focus...) and I have the search/OSK to touch up, its in working order but it doesnt look too good yet...

Can anyone please suggest any nice free fonts that would improve the look of my frontend?

Also, what the hell should I call it? lol...

im not planning on any more features than what you can see right now, but im open minded....

I dont think ill ever release the code because I put a lot of effort into this program so far, but if anyone wants a copy / feature let me know..

Basically all i want to know are the good points and the bad points of my frontend.

    Thanks!

EDIT: If you vote, please post a message of your reasons.... (what I should change!!) thanks!!

All credit for the buttons goes to who ever made the mac skin for RR, thank you very much!!

EDIT: Please visit http://mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=67630 for the New skin! (pic not updated) ( and also tell me if you like the new skin better than the old one in this thread!

      i didnt make one yet....

but basically what u see is what u get. sweet and simple, the one thing i was aiming for was SPEED.... i can load a 15000 playlist in under 1 second, everything is lightning fast.... thats the greatest feature IMO.....

but its got almost everything winamp has, you can browse by genre, if anyone needs by artist, etc etc, i could add it but I dont use it so I didnt put it in...

Search searches all songs, path, title, artist, everything in under 1 second, the playlist maker is extremely easy to understand and its very fast.....

i have encorporated winamps VIS window so i have like 200 vis's that keep changing, its really beautiful

GPS will also be integrated so there wont be no losing focus, apps also,,,

video has not been completed yet, but pictures is pretty basic just specify the folder in the settings and itll go through the folder....

theres other misc things but i cant think now...

It does what I want so far, and I havent had many bugs so im happy...

Might be a little bright at night but WOW, not too shabby! should be easy to find those buttons while driving as well.
If it does not work the way you want it to, hack it!

how are you achieving this "lightening fast" speed?

          what is this written in?
how can you increase spead of a winamp playlist?

i dont think i've ever had an issue with speed of loading a playlist in RR

I wrote it in VB 6. the Listbox control I made myself. Im not using any of the playlist loading features of Winamp, i found it too slow and just not 'right', any normal listbox takes forever to load that many songs and to get the genres and all the song info, so everything is saved in my own custom format and I just load the file and it places it into memory, and while it does that, it does ONLY that. it doesnt update the list until its complete, thats how I got it so fast.... anyways i guess its not important.... I aimed for simplicity, and speed... and I got it...

I woudl much like comments about the look and feel you get out of the pictures, what do you think? I have no imagination for the look of my frontend... and I dont think ill ever add skin support, unless someone realllly begs me for it.. lol

edit: another reason why its fast is because everything is together in the same place, theres no loading screens, only loading youll get is when you first add the songs which is normal,,, took me about 2 mins to add 15000 songs to the list...

Ive tried many frontends and either there were too many buttons all over the place and it wasnt simple enough for in car usage, or there were loading screens, or a few bugs, and I also wanted to have my current speed on the main window (that part of the software isnt done yet but ill get to it)

Over all it looks really good, but if this becomes a really good app, the you def will have to add skin support.

Yeah i guess I will, but for now i dont want to go through the hassle, I'm going to make it look nice default then some time ill add skin support if lots of ppl end up using it... but I dont have a bluetooth phone or mobile internet in my car and I dont think I ever will so im going to stick with the KISS principle!

                      Thanks for your input!

well the 'light' button dims the screen, should be pretty good at night, otherwise ill ahve to make it a little darker!

To me, this is a must in a front-end. And being able to switch to any type at any time (not having to press a left/right button until you get to the sort type you want). Looks nice though. I can't really vote till I try it out

can you elaborate a little? "And being able to switch to any type at any time (not having to press a left/right button until you get to the sort type you want)"

I dont quite understand what you mean...
edit: wait, do you mean like frodoplayer?

Heres my take on the artist thing, i have over 15000 songs, it would take forever to scroll down a list to find an artist, and since some songs dont have any id3 tags etc, they wouldnt even show up. My search button is fast, and the OSK will be very easy to use while driving, it will take a lot less time and youre sure at 100% to find all the songs with that search criteria. (with a list id have to scroll while driving, with an OSK it would be just like dialing a # on a phone, pretty simple and not tooooo dangerous...

Anyways, to each there own i guess. If people like my program and want an extra feature, ill try to add it.
