Wow, I think I'm gonna get one to play with. The one thing that would make this perfect would be a NAS type of device/interface.

Wonder if it offers some kind of upgradeable firmware to support future codecs. As cheap as it is, probably not.

sorry for not knowning, but whats a NAS interface ?

also, i dont think updating the firmware would be a big deal on these days.. support is the only problem, all these are made in china and come frm the manufacturer directly...

network attached storage. So you can transfer stuff to it across a network, instead of USB, might of been a little bit faster transfer.

Yeah, after looking at it a bit more, they do support the 480mbps "high speed" usb 2.0, which is ok for me.

Some of those extremely cheap items say they'll do USB 2.0, but it'll only be the 2.0 "full speed", which runs at like 12mbps.

Now who is going to mod the case a little, put a small LCD, paint a "ipod" logo on it and then tell his friends is the new ipod.......

                    Good call thanatos.

Though it would be a cool little mod to grab the little 2.5" version and build it into a lilliput or something. Little portable video device. VGA output is a definite plus for this.

Well you know that there are VGA in small sizes right? and TS if you want (those are the ones that i was talking about) and I wasn't kidding when I say I will do it.

exactly what i was thinking. would make a great/cheap carputer for those who arent too troubled by the lack of GPS, or have alternate solutions.

after doing some more research (read: google), i've been able to find these links:

                          http://www.esstech.com/products/AVplayer/avplayer.shtm
(the main decoder chip, vibratto series)

                          http://www.szblue.com/mpegplayer_e.htm
                          (the entire board)

                          http://www.szblue.com/diyboard_e.htm
(this one supports upto 3 IDE drives, so connect a HDD, a DVD....)

so, anyone taking the jump to make one of these ?

I wish someone had a pic of what the video out looks like. There must be some sort of on screen menu. If it doesnt suck...I'd consider grabbing one of these since the price is right.

the menu system is similar to thouse found in DVD Players. its a little more customizable in terms that u can set a custom wallpaper instead of just the plain blue background.

try these 2 links for some screenshots:
                              http://www.szblue.com/images/midi-6018-05.jpg
                              http://www.szblue.com/images/midi-6018-04.jpg

the 'buttons' seems bit enough for easy Touchscreen use.
