  • Question on Garmin 16 GPS receiver

You can skip this part and go down to my question but this is my configuration so far

Like everyone else in this forum, I am putting a computer in my vehicle. I have solved my "which computer/motherboard should I get" problem with FV24 motherboard in a with Pentium III 933Mhz, 256MB ram, and 2 Maxtor 160GB HD for a total of 320GB and 4 fans and a port to my AC vent (110 degree summer ya know).

I have solved my "how do you make a clear enclosure without breaking or chipping or cracking the plexi" problem with a Lexan box 7.5"X8.5"X4.5" due to the fact that you can beat it with a hammer and it wont break.

I have solved my "which power supply should I get" problem with the 12 volt 150 watt programmable shut off timer SFX-12-15 SFX from http://www.opussolutions.info/sfx.htm.

I've solved my "which monitor should I use" problem with Xenarc 7" wide touch VGA/video monitor 700TSV from www.4spies.com for $525 shipped to my house a few hours before they jacked the price up to $580.

Heres my dilemma. I don't know squat about GPS receivers or softwares. Give you an idea, I just learned the term "lock" today.

My questions for you guys are which is the best receiver and software to use in a car computer? I've done some research and came up with the Garmin GPS16 receiver because its WAAS capable and it has a fast lock time. I'm planning on using the USB adapter and wiring the receiver to constant power so it doesn't loose its lock. I drive my truck every day anyway so I'm not worry about the receiver draining my battery. I will be running Windows XP Professional. As of now, I don't even know if the GPS16 with USB adapter will even work with XP. The FV24 has only 1 COM port and its taken by the Xenarc touch screen. I am also adding an 8 port relay control module which also uses COM port. Anyone who is using the GPS16 please leave fee backs

As for software, I'm looking for a software that gives N S E W heading, vehicle speed, voice notify turn to turn information, automatic reroute if I missed a turn, display vehicle trail during the trip, total distance traveled per trip, zoom in down to the street address, zoom out to the whole state, and most important, it must work with the Garmin GPS 16 receiver.

    My $.02-
If you use the garmin 16 via usb, do not plan on using microsoft maps and streets/ map point because it will not work. you'd need to plug it into a 'real' serial port. There's an article on this in the MS knowledgebase.

Anyway I am using the GPS 16 + MP2002 and it works well for me...

I built a VIA Epia 5000 mini-ITX PC for my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (with the same LCD as you, except I opted to go without the touchscreen and am now struggling over what to get for a mouse).

Anyways, I just bought a Garmin GPS16 w/ USB mod and magnetic mount from NavTechGPS. It works wicked ****ah!

      http://www.navtechgps.com/supply/gps16.asp

However, I had to downloal the latest drivers from here (because the drivers it came with caused a blue screen)

      http://mct.com.tw/download/1S_P/pu232_260.zip

and then follow the directions from here (because it kept detecting the GPS receiver as a mouse)

where did you mount your screen? is your 5000ITX capable of playing DVD and DivX?

I got one with serial port and cig adaptor cuz I want to hook it to a switch so I can turn it on and off.

One more thing, I know you're new to the board and I'll let it slide this time. Please don't use words only you or your neighbor can understand. I mean what the hell is "wicked ****ah" If it works great then say its great. If it sucks then say it sucks.

          Copilot

I don't know of any software that is better than CoPilot. Spendy, but in my eyes and I think many its one of the best apps out there. ESPECIALLY for TOUCH SCREENS.

I have the copilot software and receiver. Works great.

          And cproaudio....

"One more thing, I know you're new to the board and I'll let it slide this time. "

You'll let him slide this time... for him using his own terms....since when do you have any say over what people say on this board. I don't see the term Administrator or Moderator by your name....

              Hmm

Never said I knew what he meant, simply stated that you have no business telling him what he can and can't do. Your not the one who can choose to allow or not to allow anything.

Simple point...never said I knew what it meant.

By context clues, I would say that he mean that it worked awesome!??

Nuff Said. (dohhh....I hope that term is allowed by you on this board)

Sorry for being such a dink to ya btw.... :-)

I meant the Garmin GPS 16 works great. I live on the east coast, in a suburb of Boston, and it has no problem tracking our WAAS satellite.

For mapping software, I opted to go the cheap route and use DeLorme's Street Atlas 2003, and I'm surprised at how robust it is. I couldn't find a standalone copy of the Copilot software? Their description of Door-To-Door (by the same company) seemed to lack the features I sought (spoken turn-by-turn directions w/ visual guides (arrows, etc.))

The Xenarc display isn't mounted yet; I'm looking for some sort of vent mount kit (to keep it from obscuring the view out the windshield). I rarely use my A/C (prefer windows & sunroof) or heater (heated seats are more than enough), so I think this would be an ideal spot.

My Eden5000 box has a slim, 8x DVD-ROM drive w/ PowerDVD software and so far it's real smooth (I've only tested playback using the Cowboy Bebop Session 1 disc).

By DivX, do you mean (.avi) files encoded with DivX? Any video player software should play them with the latest DivX codec installed...

p.s. - Way to make a fellow feel welcome Maybe this will help. Some might consider use of "slang" a show of "ignorance". Shrug. I prefer to try and look up things I don't understand.

heh You'd surprised on how much processing power DivX movies take. My FV24 with P-III 933 cant play a DivX clip encoded at 720X512 284Kbps fast enough to sync with the sound. Not to drive the tread off topic, where did you mount your GPS receiver? Since you ordered one with magnet mount, I assume its on top of your vehicle.

I'd like to give it the clearest sky-view possible and I'm planning on placing the gps near the rear, top brake light. I think it'd look least out of place there

Unfortunately, the magnetic mount kit is backordered until the mid-to-end of October. But, it only cost ~$10, so I can't complain. Not too much, anyways!

                            RE: DivX

                            p.s. - VIA's Eden5000 C3 CPU runs @ 533mhz; it's been compared, though I'm not sure how accurately, to a Pentium 2 class CPU. It's also fanless, only using a low-profile aluminum heatsink.

Aside from the obvious lack-of-speed, the pro's include low power consumption (the whole system uses less than 60w), it runs silently, and stays surprisingly cool. I've got a Western Digital 100gb, 7200RPM drive w/ 8mb buffer, and even it seems to stay cool under load.

Heh, just noticed that cproaudio has a month on e-GrandCher98 as far as membership goes

and as far as a truely accurate solution goes, the gps16 is probably your best bet. otherwise, there are a number of decent native usb recievers, deluo is a name i think. do a search, i remember a few threads just the other day on them.

and i think that the e533 would probably be comparable to a c400. (never having used the e533).
