  • Best/Easiest GPS software for Australia

    Hi guys,
Jumping onto this GPS bandwagon, i've got a navman, but figured i might as well use the CarPC.
So i've got windows 7, and RR running for radio etc, but wondering what easy/free software Aussie users use and recommend with easy/free maps.

    Cheers

    Subscribed..
I know my gps runs igo.. dunno if you can get a pc version.. Will probably run oziexplorer but that is for offroad topo maps not navigation so probably no help to you.
Be keen to find out what other data / programs we could use..

The two that I can think of is Igo8 and centrafuse.

centrafuse isn't a gps navigation program...
but igo could be worth looking at...

centrafuse has a navigation version, which is why I suggested it.

                igo seems to be WindowsCE?
                GarminPC not available
CoPilot Live, i think i have to buy the program, then a map for aus in addition...

Yeah other than say using google maps somehow I don't think you will find any free options.. (would love to be wrong)
I did find some hacked versions of iGO but not sure that I would want to use them..
And yes GarminPC is no longer although can still be downloaded it appears but again a lot of a hack..
So yes I think they have us by the short and curlys a bit..

I would be interested to know if there was anyone who was willing to share the format of their data. If we can get access to semi open and cheap data then the possibility of creating some software exists. Could use openstreetmap data but that is user collected so not going to be foolproof

I have found the igo8 pc version. It's pretty hard to come across due to the links getting deleted. It is actually a demo released a few years ago specifically for the PC that didn't get any further. It seems OK but the maps are outdated.

Garmin Mobile PC is available for purchase, you can find it for sale linked to resellers from the Garmin site but from what I have read it seems that you can't get updated maps, not easily at least. I have downloaded the program and can install a trial if you extract the exe using 7zip then run main.msi.

What I have been trying to do is get Android-86 running with GPS. I can get the GPS detected as ttyUSB0 but the apps and settings don't pick it up.
I am also investigating how to build a WinCE x86 machine so that maybe we can get something else - iGo Primo would be awesome but they haven't replied to any of my emails.

I ended up getting the GarminMobilePC, and City Navigator Australia & New Zealand NT 2012.30 for the maps.
Seems to work ok so far with my BU-303. But i need to work out how to tell it where i want to go without having a keyboard plugged in. as far as i can tell, there's no OSK etc...

No I think if you look at Mickz build thread he coded an on screen keyboard for his front end for it
