  • Help!

Ok, I need a lot of answers relatively quickly...and yes I've been through most of the GPS posts already.

OK I am in the process of building my carputer (buying/installing the screen over winter break) and my parents are looking for a good Christmas gift. I was thinking GPS.

Now I need some help deciding what route to take. First of all, should I buy a package deal with software and reciever, or should I just buy the reciever and use other software (such as Destinator 3 - which I've only heard good things about)?

Next I have a question about TMC. I have only read about this in Europe, does this exist in the US, more specifically Las Vegas, NV and Pheonix, AZ? If so, what recievers have this capability? Also I'm confused about the speed cameras feature. Is this available everywhere too?

Then lastly of course, what are your recomendations to do. And any other suggestions or knowledge I might not know.

My recommendation is to plan ahead so that you're not scrambling for answers at the last minute.

Personally, I'd get a package with MS S&T or something, since I use the mapping software at home for other purposes, then use the GPS in the car. You may not need that.
I'm not going to recommend a sofrtware package, since that's all a matter of personal taste and usability in your environment. Try them all and choose the one that you like the best.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

I got this bundle last year and I'm very happy with it. Delorme and Royaltek Sapphire.

I like my earthmate GPS, but the software is bad for it. I'd get iGudiance just so that you could currently use NaviVoice. I will be adding Destinator3 support once the new SDK comes out.

I''ve got the Sapphire and have been happy with it. Also, it's cool looking. No WAAS capability but unless you plan on flying Cat II approaches into uncontrolled airports, you'll never notice.

Also using Street Atlas and have MS Streets and Trips. I like SA better, but haven't tried any of the other packages.

what do you guys think about the newest holux (211 I think...). Is that a very good reciever to use with Destinator 3? Is $100 a good price shipped?
