  • GPS newb question

I just need to know if any GPS reciever can be used with any GPS software or are there compatability issues i need to look for, if so, is there a compatability list out there?? I know, this question has probably been answered before, but i'm sort of in a hurry and don't have time to search right now, sorry.

Why are you in such a hurry - do you plan on getting lost!!

Most GPS software will accept an NMEA signal and most GPS receivers will supply an NMEA signal. I don't know if there are any Sirf only receivers and software.

Decide what GPS software you want to use. Then buy the recomended receiver or if you can find the time search for the GPS receiver that people use with that program and are happy with.

    Good Luck

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you're in too much of a hurry to search for it right now then you don't have time to figure it out even if we give you the answer, which gbh did. Selecting a receiver and software involves parting with some of your hard earned dough and you need to think it through first.

HOWEVER, there is a FAQ about GPS which may be of help to you and is designed to assist people without the time to pore over all the postings to garner information on GPS. Here's the link: here and here.

        This makes you a n00b.

For those who are of the anti-n00b-bashing support group, this is the perfect example of a n00b. This n00b is also a newbie, as is evident by his post count of 9 at the time of my post. However, he created a hostile environment for himself by stating that he's unwilling to do any research into his questions about GPS hardware & software compatibility.
Anyone who has a GPS unit or has done any research on the subject knows that's a very simple question with a reasonably simple answer (thanks, gbh!) It is one that anyone could easily search the forums or the 'net and have an answer in short order.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
        How about the Wiki?
