  • Receiver doesn't lock a signal???

Okay so here is the problem. I have a Holux GM-210, it worked fine for a few months, i noticed recently though (after installing my opus) that the gps does not lock onto any satellites. I tried using Sirf and resetting everything and finally got it working, but after i leave the car for more than an hour or so, it starts all over again. I have to go into Sirf, reset the receiver, cold start it, then it *might* work. Sometimes even after I do all of that, it only seems to be able to find 2 or 3 satellites. Any suggestions? Could it be that the opus is cutting off the power to the usb making the receiver lose its signal and having me to reset and cold start it all the time? If not, what else could it be?

I'm thinking it's an interference problem, have you tried putting the receiver outside of the car (roof) or moving it to another place in the car preferably away from the PC and power supply.

i thought that too but it worked in the EXACT same location for months. here are more details:

      Car: 2004 Mazda3 Hatchback
      Lcd: Xenarc 7" Tsv
      P/S: Opus 200
      Receiver: Holux GM-210

the carputer is in the trunk and the receiver is under the dash. What really is bugging me is that once i do the whole reset and cold start procuedure, it will lock around 5 satellites for hours. but once the car turns off, then it does not work anymore.

How did you power the carputer previously.

It is possible that your previosu PS has sufficient current capability on the 5 volt rail, but with the Opus, the 5 volt rail is strained, and the GPS is suffering. I know that may not explain why it works in Sirf, except that perhaps the Sirf mode uses less juice. I also think that most GPS uses some sort of capacitor to keep a little juice to the unit so it doesn't "Cold Start" each time, but if there is avoltage issue, the cap may not be being charged, hence your loss of the signal after about an hour.

Do a search on power calculator, and determine if your system is straining the 5 volt rail.

Also, did you install any other new devices, such as a setereo, amp, headunit, or did you recently install any window tint?

          Hi,

I dont think that could be the problem because the only thing that is plugged into the usb is the touchscreen and the gps receiver. The only thing that i can think of is that the usb and the t/s are both plugged into the same 4-plug usb hub that is connected to the carputer using a 15 foot usb cord. but even though that may sound like the problem, it worked perfectly before. And if the 5v is strained, then how do i get around it? I highly dubt it is because i have the 200w opus and all i have running off it is:

          athlon xp 1600
          60gb 5400 rpm
          gps receiver
          t/s
          onboard everything

I highly doubt all of that even comes close to straining a 200w opus.

Btw, Opus does not make a 200 watt PSU.

Did you do a wattage calculation. http://carpc.kyferez.com/Tools/PSUWattageCalculator.php

Try that, and let us know.

The work around is either a powered USB hub, or perhaps one of these http://www.ohmygodmyarmfelloff.com/MP3Car/PSUpower.asp

EDIT: CHanged the power calculator, I like that one better.

sorry, forgot to mention 3.5 amps being used in 5v.

                      Hmmmmm, not sure.

Did anything else change in the system, or with the car. Any repairs, instalations, modifications. Any computer hardware changes (Minus the Opus)?
