  • DIY Tracker? Help please

The thing I've got against tracking devices is the privacy aspect. So I got to wondering, if its feasible to make your own tracking device, that you personally could track. i.e:

    1. Get an old PAYG mobile phone and conceal it somewhere in the car
    2. Wire it to a charger, so its always being charged when driving
    3. Register its number with 192.com or another service that lets you track mobiles

Then if the motor gets nicked, you could logon (or call on the phone with some of these services) to find its location.

Not sure how handy you are, but I imagin that someone could wire the ringer on the cell phone to a serial port and have the computer answer the call and reply with a set of long/lat from the gps. Also has anyone looking into using a wireless internet connection to report location to a server somewhere whenever a connection is available and setting up windows to auto join networks? Not trying to hijack this thread but it seemed related.

Search using terms "GPS Tracking". It's been discussed quite a bit.
