  • iG Question and GPS Support-App Request

First off, I hate how in iGuidance POI you have to choose "By Distance" or "Alphabetical". I never want to search "Alphabetical" as it lists every place in the state! But if I do "By Distance", I can only see a list of all gas stations or all fast food, not "Chevron By Distance" or "Jack-In-The-Box By Distance". Is there any way to do what I want to do? Are other nav programs better about this, or do even OEMs have the same limitation?

Second, I'm looking for a good auto-adjust volume by GPS speed program. I want to be able to configure it to have multiple mode settings as follows:

    Off
Volume at always at 100% (I don't normally use my PC to control volume)

    Quiet Stops
Volume at 50% when less than 10MPH
Logarithmic fade to volume at 100% at greater than 25MPH

    Freeway Driving
Volume at 80% when less than 55MPH
Logarithmic fade to volume at 100% at greater than 80MPH

Etc, etc, etc. (preferably infinite configurable modes, but at least 4)

Then have hot-keys and/or a UI to switch between modes.

Does such a program exist (either stand-alone, or as a plug-in for RR or CF)? If not, I'll write one. Seems pretty easy if you know how to control the mixer (I do) and read GPS speed (I can learn).

    ---BUMP---

What's with no love on my recent threads?

    1) Does any nav program let you find "Chevron's by distance?"
    2) Can you do that with iG3?
    3) Does any app allow customizable auto-volume-adjustment by GPS speed?

At the very least they are all good ideas, especially the search for specific POI and then display by distance.

I still don’t know how you guys can deal with the current offerings; I still have issue even with all the hacks and mods.

there's some plugin for road runner, I think its called GPS speedo. It has a big speedometer and it can adjust volume based on speed.

And what does this have to do with the OP's issue with the searching for POIs in iGuidance?
That RR Speedo takes raw data from the GPS and has absolutely nothing to do with iGuidance.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
          How about the Wiki?

OEM (Toyota) that I know of doesn't have this limitation.
For example. If I want to look for Costco, I just type in Costco and it give me the list off all Costco in the disk with the closet one on top. It listed by name, address and distance from where I am. The way the system search for POI is PERFECT.
MS S&T search similarly, but very cumbersome. You type in the name, it gives you all posible match in the database, but didn't really sorted by closet distance, instead, best match.

maybe because 80% of the original post (all but the first paragraph) was asking about a GPS speed-based volume control
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

thanks evandude. I'm sure the GPS Speedo can be used to control any volume channel, thus it can be set to control wave, which happens to be the channel the iguidance uses to speak

I had written that feature (POI searching by name, etc...) into my GPS app that uses MapPoint but it's not done yet (and is on hold now that I'm using IG3). It is a feature that I dearly miss and I've been toying with the idea of trying to write something that will let me look up a POI using my MapPoint search then push the address or coordinates to IG3. I haven't gotten anywhere with it since I'm working on something else right now but if I get it to work, I'll post it here.

It's so incredibly lame that you can only find "all fast-food by distance" or "taco-bell's listed in a seemingly random order" instead of being able to find "taco-bell by distance".

GPS Speedo does not support multiple settings chanable via hot-key. I guess I will have to write the app myself.

Lol, i ran into this last night, first time ever using iguidance. we were on the way home from Atlanta, 2 in the morning, and starving. so i had my co pilot search for food places, and after being extremely confused, i resorted to the old measure of reading signs on the side of the highway... worked out flawlessly.

When I want to eat I just hit the 8-key on my keyboard. But the same could be achieved on a touchscreen in a typical CarPC setup with a simple script which would send key presses/mouse clicks to: Enter Destination > Points of interest > Restaurant > F (fast food) > By distance

Yeah, it works ok for "fast-food by distance", "GAS by distance", or "ATM by distance", but then after you choose that, you still have to scroll down forever to find what you are really looking for (Jack-In-The-Box, Chevron, or Wells Fargo).

"Taco Bell by distance" followed by a search for "toilet by distance" heheh
