  • BU353 and centrafuse

    Hi,

I have this USB GPS: http://store.mp3car.com/BU_353_USB_G..._p/gps-002.htm

I am trying to make it work with Centrafuse auto 3.5, I am running windows 7.

under windows if I use the GPUINFO application, it does receive data but after a few minutes, it still says "no fix". I don't know if that's normal or not.

Under CF3.5 I select the right port in the settings, and set bit rate to 4800 bps.

but I am not sure if I need to set it to SIRF or NMEA? I tried both and none is giving me a position.

I used CF before (before I sold my infill G4 a few years back) and I had no problem with the built-in GPS. I just don't know what's the problem here. Any idea?

    Thanks

Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

      thanks.
I tried it but I still don't get a fix whether it's with gpsinfo or centrafuse.
any idea? the receiver is under the windshield (inside). may sound stupid, but these receivers are supposed to work inside the car, right?

      thanks

You're not using Xport or gpsgate are you? It's a direct connection from GPSInfo or CF to the virtual serial port?

You need to make sure no metal is above the receiver, also if your windshield has heating elements or built-in antenna in the glass can cause problems as well. Just a thought SNO

No I am not using Xport or any third party program. I just use the settings (COM and bit rate and protocol) in centrafuse. GPSINFO is closed when running centrafuse/destinator.

Do I need such a program if I am only going to use the GPS with centrafuse?

thing is, even GPSINFO can't get a fix. the device itself never blinks and according to the doc it means it doesn't get a fix. I don't have enough cable to pull it off the car and see if the windshield is causing me trouble.

I'll go there with the laptop and see what happens.

            thanks

You've installed the drivers for the GPS i assume?
I've got mine on the rear parcel shelf, and i don't have any issues apart from it being slow to get a lock (couple of mins), but once it does, it's fine.
Except for under the carport, it doesn't work of course..
              EDIT: Sorry mines a BU-303

I have the same GPS receiver. If I use a GPS test program without running Centrafuse, it can acquire a lock and keep it. As soon as I start Centrafuse, it keeps the signal locked for about 10 seconds and then loses it. I mostly use GPS on my android phone, so this wasn't a big deal for me, but I can confirm that you aren't the only one having this issue. I'm also using Win7 with Centrafuse 3.6 .

Is your GPS hooked up directly to a usb port or is it going through a hub? If the latter, try hooking it up directly.

                  thanks for the answers.

I was able to get a fix with GPSINFO, it was literally instant, I probably had the receiver in a wrong spot.

Though, It still doesn't work with CF, it seems like CF isn't able to start reading from it - it doesn't even lock in even for a second. I wanted to give Xport a try and have it relay the BU353 onto another COM port but unfortunately I installed this W7 in 64 bit. I really don't want to reinstall everything so I might give a shot to another map software. There is a thread about this on CF forums.

Anyone familiar with a Xport alternative that would work in 64 bit?

                  Thanks

All right I was able to make it work. I manually changed the COM port from 10 to 2, and CF started to work right away!

That makes sense. Applications require special provisions to use COM ports over 9. I'm shocked CF doesn't do that, but at least it's working for you now.
