  • Garmin mobile pc - discontinued?

I ordered Garmin mobile pc the other day, took a look on their website today and noticed it's been discontinued. Any idea what's up?

According to a variety of post on this and the Centrafuse forums, Garmin has discontinued support for their GMPC product. Shame, too, because it was nice. Poor sales, reduction in support costs...who knows?

Umm, I'm guessing it's been discontinued? lol

Heres the response I got back when I asked about a replacement product (there is nothing at this time).

I wrote a blog post and tweeted garmin. Maybe we can get some more details. That was a cool product. Thanks for sharing this with the community.

The good thing is the maps can still be updated, albeit at a cost each time.

Which is what I was trying to find out. Thanks for sharing this with me. I, like others am ok with updating maps at a cost. I personally don't think they should be "free" updates unless it's like the first year or so.

How so? I don't see why would they continue to support this product. Or can they use updates from some of their hardware products?

from what ive known, the garmin hardware uses the same map files as the software, there is very little hacking needed to make it work. im not sure how to do it though...

GMPC used the same map packs as their hardware devices. I never had to hack anything just put them in the GMPC folder... i believe? lol

Let's hope this continues! When an update becomes available and anyone notices; they should post the "heads up" here so those of us that want to try to update it can at that time.

As of right now I'm not aware of any plans. However, we do pass along all customer feedback that we receive, so if we receive a large demand for this, it will certainly be passed along. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

                          what did you ask them?

i dont even really care if GMPC stays discontinued... i just want to be able to use my program i bought for at least 24 months with updated maps.

and the maps dont even concern me because i know we can manually update them. its that damn activation process... whats to say the next time i go to activate it says "cannot find server" and never lets me use the software again?

imo, they should shut down the activation server now and put a patch on their website allowing all existing keys to work without live activation.

Not to bring an almost dead thread back to life, but after using multiple Navigation Softwares, I have found my home with Garmin mapping softwares. I believe the software was canceled since the GarminFone came out and no one really uses their PCs to run navigation since the price of handheld gps devices have dropped astronomically. That said, I have a garmin nuvi 200w and when I updated the maps to the 2011 version, i just copied and dropped the map from my nuvi to the main folder for GMPC and when I started GMPC, the 2011 maps loaded with no problem.

I would say anyone who can update their Garmin navigation devices, can also update their GMPC using the same maps.
