  • Help !!!!! I need thoughts on adding Microsoft Anna to Windows 8

I have an issue with Garmin Mobile PC no longer being able to announce street names in Windows 8 as it requires the Microsoft Anna voice which is included in Windows Vista and Windows 7 and can be installed in Windows XP if needed. Since Garmin is no longer supporting this product, there is no update for the new voices that are included in Windows 8. Windows 8 comes with Microsoft David (united States), Microsoft Hazel (Great Britain) and Microsoft Zira (United States) by default. This may of may not affect other navigation products out there but I am not sure.
At this time can any one think of a way to add Microsoft Anna to Windows 8 or can is it possible the copy and rename one of the existing voice profiles to Microsoft Anna to trick Garmin Mobile PC and other voice programs to use that voice profile?

After doing some research I find that these new voices (client/desktop versions) can be added to Windows 7 and earlier. So I assume there is some compatibility with the voices between OS. I have also been able to locate the Microsoft Anna voice file and the registry setting for it in Windows 7.
I am now looking to see if I can find the text to speech files in windows 8 and if it is possible to add the Microsoft Anna voice files.
Anyone knows where the text to speech files in Windows 8 are located to save me some time?

        Thanks for the registry settings
Where can I find the actual files for voices in Windows 8?

Hi looks like this can't be done, using earlier Windows voice files will fail as the structure has been changed in Win8. Files are in the same location as before - windows\speech.

I didn't really hadn't notice it missing until you mentioned it, turn by turn announcements are of course still fine.

See this post for info on adding Spoken street names to Win8

FYI Installed latest maps the other day and just got around to upgrading the car pc from Win 8 to 8.1. The upgrade overwrites the Spoken street names mod in the registry. The .reg file I made for importing into Win 8 works perfectly with 8.1, just a 1 second fix and street names are working again.

            EDIT:

FYI Windows 10 : As expected, spoken street names mod works fine in Windows 10. For those new to this, here again is the one I put together. The file is Voices_32_MsAnna.rex found here ->

Click on the link below, then right click on Voices_32_MsAnna.rex and select Save target as, rename the extension to reg and save it.

            /files/Download/

Import it into the registry (after making a backup of course.) Normally playing around with these entries won't case a failure of the OS, however it may stop the speech engine if you do something wrong. Backup up to be safe.
