  • Serial Port help, pins dont' make sense on comp or schematic to me

I am trying to figure out the pin outs on the serial port, and what I see in the schematic and what I have on the computer doesn't make any sense. First off, I can't read the serial port schematics because I can't decide if they are looking from the front or from the back.

So I decided to use my meter to check the pins. Funny thing was the outside was positive (the casing itself, and the outer pins were positive, 12V positive, numbers 1 and 5. Ive used a multimeter since I could walk, so I know I am doing that right. Am I missing something? I am trying to make a infared sensor, and dont' want to plug this thing up wrong the first time and fry it. Any help on the pins would be appreciated, plus why pins 1 and 6 are positive and not negative like I thought they should be.
    thanks,
    Kenny

You're welcome. Pictures are so much nicer than all those stupid drawings made up with regular text characters and symbols!
