Modifying any commerical unit would be a pinch. Can you give us some info on your current setup?

Here's my guess: since the remote starter would start the engine, it should therefore power the ACC line. Have your SDC monitor the ACC line and you're set.

Your remote start or security system should have instructions to interface with the other (if they are aftermarket). Sometimes they want a momentary pulse, and some of them want a solid signal, ground or positive. You can always turn you system on using the pulse coming out of either to the system. But we would need to know which power supply you are using.

Yep - monitor Accessory is a good one.
I opted for a remote which included an AUX button (aka: trunk popper). The problem with this is that it's a momentary switch. Which can be a PITA to hook up to a shutdown controller, unless you're good with circuits. (keep in mind, I'm a newbie at circuit design, but I have a working shutdown controller which does this)
Trunk poppers work wonders if you're only using it to toggle the power switch header on your mobo....

My system consists of a shuttle SK41 @ 1.8Ghz, 40 GB hd, 500 mb Ram, 8" LCD with touch screen and a Mystero 4.5 that has been modified.

            It also has a 40 pin microcontroller with 30 I/O and 4 A/D's.
One of the A/D's will monitor the battery supply for low voltage (and run the SDC)
One will check the power out for the PG signal.
One of the I/O will look for a signal from a remote starter to turn off the alarm (4 I/O) and bring the system out of hibernate.
It also has a 2*16 LCD mounted in the dash display for status reports.

This system definately has the Frankenstien effect. All I wanted was an MP3 player

The remote WILL NOT start the car, just control the system in the car. I still like to turn the key!

If you have a mPU it should be easy to do. You can use the security system to turn off the security, have the mPU monitor that.

'Door unlock' goes to ground, it flips a relay for a given time to start the car, but not without checking to see if the car is already started.

The you have it pulse your SDC to start the computer. Or even have the relay as a DP, and have that hold the 'on' button for you.

How about something simple like this?

I know there are other versions out there. I got a ton of them when I googled "remote RF hobby"

Good catch. I googled and found this.

Ordered tonight. Man this is a fun project. I spent today re-wiring the dash and running the new HD power cables to the location.

I got the kit today. The PCB is very well produced and easy to assemble (1 hour). Started first time. It has 4 10a relays that can be momentary or toggled (jumper).
                    Greater than 300' range.
It draws 8ma (0.008a) when all off and adds ~40ma with each relay keyed.
When set to toggle, the output can turn the CPU on or off.

                    Good for beginner!

This one is a local build. If you order the RX and TX fob, you can get the rest of the parts local to you.

It is adviseable to place a 5.1v zener diode across the supply lines in case of overvoltage.
Go ahead, ask me how I know....
The main board can tollerate 12v, but the RX daughter board is 5v only (PIC controller on board).
Still a very versitile and useable system.
