  • Hacked radio for DAB / FM

    Ok the dsr/dsbr 100 usb fm radio is now hard to find and crap if you do, so going for something to be a updated version is tricky as nothing really exists.

    Option I think I see is to get a dab fm / module and build an interface, problem others have found is no one sell small quantitys of dab boards, so the real problem was getting the boards.


    alba trdab2830 looks like a donor, cheap, appears to be a generic module, and no doubt used in other similar spec radios, so supply not a problem


    Any interest?

    A simple small pic should be able to communicate with it, pic can be serial and use a usb/serial dongle or just a faster pic with usb core

    I am taking delivery of one on monday, then I will post internal shots, I dont mind buying one because (1) if all fails I put it back as I bought it and someone gets an xmas gift... (2) if I cant find a way to talk to the module, a simple relay driven output port can just hammer the buttons to control it.


    Before anyone says 'it cant do audio down the usb cable' GOOD! I would not even consider plugging it in if it did! usb audio only has disadvantages, ie bandwidth.

      Yup, amstrad, bush, goodman, alba, schneider, matsui, saisho, mitsui, the list goes on.

      What do they all have in common, they dont build what they sell, so they buy in the modules and then farm out the production of the plastic case to somewhere else, then have it assembled together for peanuts.

      Another thing they have in common is buying the cheapest parts possible, whih means they all tend to end up buying form the same supplier.

      all these units are advertised with the same spec, dab+fm 20 preset memories, 10 on dab 10 on fm.

      IE, they all bought the same modules for the dab.

      And what I was proposing was not 'interfacing' the unit par se, because if the modules have been customised it may need seperate hardware for each module brand, but 'controlling' it same way as you would control door locks on your car, not as basic as relays but say cd4066 to imitate button presses by wiring direct to the modules keyscan lines.

      Its so simple it cant fail, but I was hoping to get a bit of interest and involvement hence the posts, I am in a position to start building as I design, but my software knowledge is a bit dodgy, I'm just learning VB as I go, the electronics side is functional (on paper)

        Software's more up my street. What O/S is the controlling PC running?

        Under Windows, you'll need a device driver. I've never written a device driver, but I'm pretty sure you wont be able to do it from VB - so you either need to get an open source USB driver to control your hardware - which will probably be a dll that you can access from VB6 reasonably easily and from VB.NET via P/Invoke.

        Much easier, if hardware is your forte, is to use the PC serial port - serial coms from Windows is reasonably easy. Some Pics have RS232 built in so all you've got to do is program the PIC.

          I will be using a pl2303, then a pic16f88, currently playing with a rs200 module, but I have lost net access, so I only get a chance to log on when at a friends etc, but I am still working on this just cant keep ppl updated!

          should have net back in a few weeks, once I finish the fight with ntl.
