  • Lexus climate control screen help

I have a climate control screen in my rx300. It is basically a lcd, not a nice pc type though more of a digital alarm clock type. Well, what I am trying to do is to display that info in a pc program but I have no idea how to get it. Is there something I could hook up to the harness and get the data from it? I am fairly good at programming in C++, and VB, but not too familiar with car stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated.

There will be no easy way. You'll have to build a breakout harness for whatever wiring goes to it, then try to capture what will most likely be a serial datastream, and decode it. Would help to just take it apart first, get an idea of how many wires you're dealing with, and try to identify any controller chips running the LCD. You might just get lucky and it will be a standard LCD controller thats well-documented...

When I took apart the screen in my SC, there were so many pins running to it that I gave up, and decided to work on a workaround.
So I'll just remember the last settings, and if somethign gets messed up, i'll have the ability to reset it.

Well my current solution is to put it in a box behind the dash and shine a webcam on it so I can at least see the info, but yah ill rip it out later this week when I get my dash done and see what kinda chips im working with and whatnot. Thanks for the tips guys keep em coming

Were there enough pins to make one for each display segment (or enough for binary-coded digits?). Could be parallel, in which case it will be easy to read with a PIC.

There are a lot of pins. The LCD... atleast in my car... is raised solely on those pins... there's at least 24 of them.

I think whats needed is a pic of the screen and a pic of the wiring. Of course from there it will be a lot of probing to reverse engineer it, then making an interface controller, then programming the PC side...not a trivial project, but shouldnt be that difficult either

I will try to remove the screen from my lexus tonight and post pictures. Any portion in particular which would be benifitial(sp)?

Just a view of the front screen (if its a character LCD, try to get it so you can see both the on and off segments), then any connectors going to it.

In "IMG 0436.jpg" There is an LCD data pin. Maybe if you have a friend at Toyota/Lexus, they can provide you with the proprietary connector for that to some universal standard. Longshot, but why else would there be a cable connector with LCD data being a label?

Not sure but maybe it means its going to the lcd already in the car. I dont have any pals at toyota unfortunatly.

If you have any way of collecting serial data hook it up carefully. If it is an output, then you'll see something you might be able to decode, and if you see nothing, then I guess it could be an input, but I don't think it has any memory in there. I have an rx300 too and it is just the character display with lighted LED segments so pretty simple. Can't be that much coding going into that thing. My guess is that each part (radio, climate, and the trip display, ect) each have a dedicated bunch of wires that accepts some really simple binary that you could simulate and/or capture.
Like for instance, the trip part. You switch between a-mpg and a-mph and others but it just tells a different part to light up, not a bunch of pixels. So its probably like 3bits saying which one to turn on.
This is all a guess by the way...
If you have a spare one or can find one on eBay, maybe you should get it and then start playing around with it a little more aggressivly like pumping in info to tht port and see what happens then refine. Or maybe Lexus will ive you that info if you pretend to be a certified tech???
                            good luck.
