  • Car2PC adapter caught on fire

well for starters i don't know where to post this, but i guess it's considered an input device so ill post it here, (mods, move it if i'm wrong).

I went to the front seat and turned on my main switch for the pc, nothing happened so i decided to go to the back and check if i had done something wrong, then out of nowhere i saw smoke coming from my glove box (where my Car2PC and stock deck are) i ran to the front opened the glove box and the car2pc adapter harness that connects to the radio was on fire, i put it out and then i shutdown the main switch.
i started inspecting and noticed that the usb wire to the adapter was hot as he11, so i took out the pc and started to check for damages, the car2pc is gone all the wires melted together, the radio wouldn't turn on, tcover wouldn't move, so after a lot of backtracking and and checking i found that the ACC fuse had blown, i replaced it and the radio came back on (yes i was amazed too, considering that the back of the radio has a big charred spot) so did the tcover.
so it looks like the only damage i had was the car2pc, i don't know what happened here though, maybe the atx overloaded the 5v rail, but then again my touch screen was fine (thank god) and so was my gps antenna.
so now i have the whole pc out of the car i'm going to have to install it again because i ripped out everything to check for damages, and throw the m2 in the lake out back POS.

here it goes, i bought an m2-atx installed it and bench tested it and it worked pc booted fine, so i decided to move it to the car i hooked up +, GND, and ACC. went to the front seat and turned on my main switch for the pc, nothing happened so i decided to go to the back and check if i had done something wrong, then out of nowhere i saw smoke coming from my glove box (where my Car2PC and stock deck are) i ran to the front opened the glove box and the car2pc adapter harness that connects to the radio was on fire, i put it out and then i shutdown the main switch.

Why are you throwing the M2 out? 1 device malfunctioning doesnt make the M2 to blame. And anyways, when an M2 fails, you know it. Everything goes with it.

This sounds like the Car2PC's fault. Maybe there was a little strand of wire from when you cut a power line that fell on the PCB causing a short and causing a fire. Hard to tell.

    Do you have pics?

Also "overloading" a rail means you pulling too much juice, not the M2 putting out too much juice. That isnt how electronics work. Or else everything plugged into your house right now would blow up when you turn off a light since there is "extra" juice that is not in use.

But again, doesnt sound like an M2 problem at all.

that's the part i don't understand, the problem was isolated to only the car2pc adapter nothing else got damaged. so i don't know if it was a coincidence that it was m2 or if it was going to happen either way.

well i decided to go back and double check everything i checked all my pc components, all the usb components, and they all worked, then i moved on to the m2 and checked all the voltages with a volt meter and they were all fine.
so i reinstalled everything back into the car but i added a diode and a fuse to every power line just in case, this way i won't get power feedback to the car and if the diode fails the fuse will blow.
