  • video cams for our carputers?

the GPS system on my father's car has a video camera mounted on the rear bumper. so when the car goes into reverse, LCD screen shows everything you normally couldn't or hard to see.

from what I understand, that particular system only works with automatic transmissions (don't know why tho).

is it possible to hook up a video camera to our carputers (one of those dual video input screens, maybe?) and use reverse light to switch it on and off?

I believe this is technologically possible, but don't have enough knowledge to do it myself...

anybody wants to give it a shot?

...but don't those web cams utilize a usb interface? What I was thinking was a small cam with rca type outputs and the power to it would be triggered by the reverse light ans switched via a relay. How were you thinking of doing it? Just having the web cam on all of the time and switching to the capture software to view the camera output? Or what?

reason is if it's not automated and you have to stop doing something to use it... how much would it get used?

Would it be more useful to have a fish-eye type lens in the camera?

I found this little thing on ebay (at least 10 of them right now, so please don't step on my toes...):
                http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=14957

it would be perfect for this project, 72 degree viewing angle, 0.5 lux infrared, NTSC/PAL output, 9v DC... shipping is a bit rip-off, but starting price is low...

I'm getting one, what do you guys think?

Nice find, but I don't think it's weather resistant??? I could be wrong though. You might try x10.com...I know they sell night vision wide angle cameras too.

hm.... I just realized the image should be mirrored... is there any way to do that without buying a "reversed" cam?

well heres what i'm doing. i got a web cam to use with my custom interface. Its a logitech one, and its pretty good. Remove the casing and the lens hole is about 3/4" and under 1.5" sq for the board. comes with software that allows you to reverse the image horizontal and vert. Has motion detection (which i'll use for the interior cam) You can use more than one cam, but only one at a time. Got pretty good night view, but with reverse lights shouldn't be a problem.

Still trying to intergrate it with my interface.

Oh, i got mines cheap too, 18 bux each, got two.

the problem with USB cams are, they are slow, and require softwares to use them. when I go into reverse, I want to see the video instantly. so for this reason, I choose video cam.
