  • PDA for remote

while looking through the forum reading about imput devices and remotes, i reminded me of my ongoing research of how I can use my PDA to control my car pc. Im still going to use a 7in touch screen to interface with the pc but i also wanted to be able to grab my pda and be able to change songs, load playlist etc. I knew of a program for PPC2002 that did exactly this but forgot the name, ive been asking around on PPC forums but no one knows what im talking about. Oh well dosent matter cause i found this nice gem.

It lets you control your pc from your PDA through wireless
And since i plan on putting wireless access in my car so i can download music from my house, this fits in perfect. I can even use it to control the house PC too so i wont even have to get out of the car to download new music Its wireless so i dont have to worry about any IR line of sight issues and while im driveing, i can hand the PDA to a passenger and tell them to browse the music collection and put on something they like.

    Google is your friend

I dont have an ipaq, i have a Dell Axim. But i kind of want to stay away from IR stuff, dont want to deal with light of sight plus my PC dosent have an IR port so i'ld have to buy one. I allready have all the wifi stuff i need.

      Thanks for the link though.

I am in the middle of implementing this in my system too. It's a pretty good idea overall, I just havn't been too successful in finding a good program to do it. More importantly, I have to decide between a Dell Axim or HP Ipaq 2215. Help me make up my mind!

I dont know if everyone missed it, but there is a link to a app in my first post that seems to do more than all the other alternatives. As far as Dell or The ipaq 2215, they both seem to be the same as far as features go. The ipaq does have bluetooth onboard so thats a plus, but you can get a bluetooth card if you need one for the axim. There are more accessories for the ipaq because its been around a lot longer than the Axim, but time will fix that. Either one you pick will be fine, they both run the exact same OS.

I've got a program called RemoteAmp which I was using to control my in-car computer...until my iPAQ bit the dust and won't connect to anything via serial or USB.

Very quick to sync up even 2000 songs over serial, and pretty simple to use.

Using WiFi it would be much better, cos you can stand outside the car and control the music (useful for any cruises etc you may wish to go on! )

I've got a question... First, I'm planning to install a in-car PC as a multimedia head unit replacement for my cd player. I also am installing an IASCA competition sound quality system in the car as well. A portion of the judging is sound pressure level (SPL), basically cranking the system as loud as possible. The rules state that you must control the system from outside the car. Now I planned on using myHTPC to run Windows Media for playing CD's/MP3's. I need to be able to control volume, play, pause and track from outside the vehicle. I also have a Handspring Treo 270 phone:
                    http://www.handspring.com/products/c...0SFFOAVAAUIIV0
and it runs Palm OS 3.5.2H. Would it be possible for me to install a infared USB reciever, install a program like Pebbles, or something similar, and control those features from outside the car with the windows up? I could even take the infared reciever apart, and mount the eye into the side of the dash, facing the glass. Any idea if this could work? Suggestions?

in theory all that should work. I've never used peebles, and its been a long time since i used palm os but im sure they have some utility to control a player on the pc, just have to do some searching. The only problem or potential problem i see is using IR. I hate IR. A better solution would be to use RF or wi-fi that way you dont have to worry about standing at a certain positon, aiming and pointing etc.

All I really care about is it being wireless, reliable, and easy to use. I could just get a remote to use with something like IRMan, but that would just mean one more device to carry around.

No. No. No. Look people. You're going through all this trouble to create these fully custom cars with awesome mind blowing computers running it all. But you need to come into the show with something that nobody has. As long as you're going to be doing this, do it right. As follows:

Anyone here know how to program or know any progrmmers? This is very simple. You all have PDA's seemingly. So you write a VERY simple program that connects via Wireless network through "Winstock" or some TCP version of a network interface. You'll have a peer1 (Your in-car computer) and a peer2 (Your PDA). Peer2 tells peer1 to "play". Peer1's DDE program sends the "play" command to either WinAMP or Windows media player. It's that easy. You can have 1000 commands if you wanted. I'm doing the same thing. Accept mine isn't just going to run my in-car computer, it's going to run activate switches and servos throughout my car too. But I could write a program for you people like that in less than a week. Not only would it be simple, but you can customize the look of it on the PDA so it looks like what ever you want. No name brand manufacturers leaving their names all over your car. Just straight out customizing. You want show?... That's show.

Don't get lazy people. If you're going to put all that work into it, do it right. If you're using WinCE, you have the biggest advantage. Simply set the encryption for your wireless network and run the program on your CE.

I can help you with that.
I'll be out of town for then next month or so, though.

However, if you're still interested then, I'd be happy to help you write the software. It really would be pretty easy.

The only catch is, you'll need a wireless network CF card for your PDA and a wireless access point in your car, but they make really small ones now. So that shouldn't be a problem to hide.

It would take about a week or two with about 2 hours a day of work to finish. Specifically, it's the GUI that would take some time. But once the GUI is done (which I usually use Macromedia Flash), it only takes a few days to write the actual code.
