  • Video camera for recording driving

I would like to put a video camera (webcam, whatever) mounted either under the rear view mirror or just sitting on the dashboard constantly recording. However, I don't want to keep the recorded video most of the time -- just in the event that something happens (i.e. car accident). I'd want the video to be automatically deleted after a short period of time (1 day perhaps) unless I tell it to not delete it. Does anyone know of any software that does this well?

Why dont you get something like this

    Not my auction

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...908691179&rd=1

This is what I have in all my police cars. That one above is spendy. But it does come with a remote.

this would need your carputer on all the time if connected to it, you'd need a powerful batterey and u'd be forever replacing or recharging it.. ?

This is only for during driving. I don't need to be recording when the car is off and I'm not in it.

In linux, ffmpeg+ffserver can capture from an attached video4linux device or firewire device into a buffer such that you only keep a certain amount of video.. The limit is based on file size, so if you wanted to keep the last 30 minutes of driving video and you were capturing at 1000kbit/s average bitrate then you'd set a 219MB buffer.

If you are running windows, look at applications designed to do similar streaming video things.. one could probably be adapted to work the same basic way...
