  • Steering wheel remote controls...

    Hi
I just finished installing my carputer (removed the HU). Now i still have the original radio/cd controls on my steering wheel...(connected by cable, not IR). Will these in any way be possible to use with the carputer/media engine?

There is a steering wheel contact closure to IR interface available from logjam electronics. You can probably use that with a program called Girder to emulate just about any action.

    Give them a look

Is Girder freeware or do you have to buy it?

I was looking at the PAC SWI-X for hooking up to the steering wheel controls. Will Girder work with it? Does the IR thingy plug into the FIR on the EPIA board?

I typed 'girder ir' into google and found this:

It looks like the FIR won't work. Does anyone know of an IR to USB adaptor that will work together with the PAC AND Girder, and which will require no special electronic modifications?

I hooked my steering wheel controls up directly to the gameport:

From what I know, EPIA boards do not have a game port. And from the looks of it, my serial ports are already accounted for. USB seems to be the only option I have left.

...and I'm not interested in taking joysticks apart and modifying them.

Yes, it is true that EPIA at least MII-12000 is devoid of game port

I have not tried the USB to GamePort adaptor myself with my circuit and program, but other users have and have reported problems getting it to work... If you don't have a built in gameport, your only option to doing it through the gameport may be to buy a cheap PCI soundcard with one.

My carputer is being built into a confined space. At this point, adding a PCI is not an option.

So what about the PAC + IR USB + Girder? Girder is meant to work with IR. The only issue is that the FIR connector is not compatible. So the last option for me is an external IR interface. It seems simple enough... "seem" being the operative word.

When I get off work (yes I'm working on a Sunday and it sucks), I'll sign up to Girder's forum and see if anyone there knows of anything that could be used.

Do I have to use IR-connection in order to use Girder, or can I connect the steering wheel remote to the computer through the COM-port?

You can't just hotwire it from what I know. You would have to build a small interface of some kind.

This seems like something that needs a simple step-by-step solution. I have found a lot of people with a lot of different ideas, but none were plug-and-play or suitable for every sittuation.

This carputer stuff is very new and there seems to be a lot of gaps that needs filling. But there are a lot of smart people here, and it's just a matter of time before simple solutions are realized.

It looks like what I may need is a USB-UIRT with the PAC SWI-X, along with girder.

                              http://www.usbuirt.com/order.htm

There are other USB IR's that I came across. I may post other findings later. So far there are solutions, but nothing cheap.
