  • Help in Kenwood HU Changer Interface

I have a KDC-PS9016 that I would like to control a MP3 player. Anybody has try something like this before?

Yesterday I was playing around with the 13 pin round jack and notice that I can put the HU to Aux by bringing pin 9 to 5V but still no data is sent out from the jack. So I cannot analyze the data.

Alpine makes something like this to control an iPod for their setups. Another company makes adapters to get the AUX into a CD changer bus, as well, but there's no control.
You're pretty much on your own here.

Realistically, if you figure out which pins are sending data and could cobble together a serial cable, you could read the data on the PC. From there, it's a matter of what signal does what, and translating that to an MP3 player, be it carPC or an iPod or something else.
This is assuming the cd changer buss in your head unit is a serial signal. It probably is.
Not a guarantee, but you can always try.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

Thanks for the info. Somehow my HU have the same connection pin but doesn't have the same Protocol.

To cut a long story I have to supply the clock to extract 6 bytes of data BA D0 BC F3 D1 D4 everytime I switch the source to Ext Disc.

I don't have a changer to monitor and definately don't know how to respond to the request.

I will try to sent some data and confuse the HU instead....

Manage to get an old KDC-C11 Changer connected. Wrote a simple data logger using PIC.

Later I manage to emulate a changer with the Disc Name,Disc No,Track No and Time. I will try out the actual operation with winamp first.

          WinAmp <-> RS232 <-> a PIC mcu <-> KDC-PS9016.

Anyone interested can look at the data log attached.

            Ok -
newbie to the formums - but plenty of embedded development experience.
Recently purchased a couple of kenwood head units for the cars and want to
integratee them with my cajun based mp3 player, which previously had a 4*40
Lcd mounted in the dash, control via IR.

So plan is to use a pic (prob 16F873,or 876) to do protocol translation to and from he kenwood to serial (maybe usb eventually).

I've noticed a number of people have at least started down this path -
ala Kecani an others but Ive yet to find any additional information on the protocol beyond the mictronics stuff, which is at least a good start.

Im handicapped in that I dont have a changer to snoop with - so Im looking
for any further information, or a starting point thats closer to the end if available.

Code will be in C as I have a suitable compiler available.
Any additional data, assistance or pointers appreciated.

            Regards
            Rayman

That Kecani stuff here seems like it is very likely going to solve this problem. If it does that would be quite awesome. Too bad they did not get together (the HU manufacturers) and use only one type, now if you change HU company you will be screwed...

Kecani - is a start but seems geared to the yampp player.
I want to do something a bit more general in the serial interface side so it can interface with more software oriented stuff.

But your point on brand is taken - but there seems to be a reasonable amount of work going on out there forsony based interfaces.

We will see how it goes i guess.

I assume theres more non - vocal inerest.

anyway - had very little time in the past week - maybe 3h. so havent got as fars id hoped, but
cable is made up (made own plug to suit the 13pin din) and installed in the car for testing,
the prototype developement hardware is made,
base code up and running - buffered serial comms and the spi skeleton in place and debug connection for 16*2 lcd up and running.

coming week should be dealing with the real data and protocol.

                    update.
am corresponding with the author of kecani to sort out protocol issues.
complete code system ready for testing is in and ready to test, estimate 90% of coding is in and time fro testing and debugging.

get started on that over the weekend.

                    Regards

Guys, I'm very interested in what you get done. (trying to be non- non-vocal) Not sure what I can do for software help, but I can try stuff with Hardware. My HU is a KDC-X889.
Have you thought of maybe a plugin for girder? It might be the most generic way to go.
Good luck and keep us in the loop on your progress.
                      Thanks!

So would the head unit use the computers hard drive as a CD changer to get music files? I have a KDC-X9 series head unit and this could replace the need of buying a sound card since you could use the head unit as a sound card/ decoder.

No, no, nothing so elegant. All the HU can do is tell the PC (which looks like a changer) to play songs, FF, Rewind, and receive song titles on the bus. The actual audio has to be played by the PC (and it comes down the interface cable as analog audio).

                              update

                              ok -
im using a KDC-MP4029 as the test unit - this supports the new ipod interface as well as the usual changer -
but the protocol appears to be slightly different from that used in the past as
i am having some trouble getting the head unit to recognise the "changer".

                              Soooooooo
I'm going to obtain a KCAip500 and snoop the protocol this uses to the head - with any luck it may give more information on the protocol and allow some additional features to be used.

                              Onward we go.
