I am wondering what can i buy that would be like the bmw joystick, which i can use for a mouse, and configure buttons? I was thinking of ShuttleXpress... with it, would i still need a mouse? for navigation, songs, watching video clips etc..

Try BMW... ...I'd be curious of the pricetag on one of those.

Not sure if this will help or not, but as I understand it the BMW iDrive has a knob which rotates, clicks in to select, and also moves like a joystick. It has been discussed here and there in this forum, try searching for "rotary encoder idrive". I just suggested some ideas for a DIY version here using an ALPS encoder.

The project is almost doable, but it would never be like the real thing anyway...

as i told hoodlum, the shuttleXpress won't FULLY replace your mouse, but it will come close, just as it won't FULLY replace your keyboard, but will come decently close. You can't select like a mouse with 2 degress of complete freedom, but you cna program it to cycle thorugh things, in both up and odwn manner. I've gotten mine so that i don't even need the mouse when just navigating and opening programs. Seriously, the girffin powermate has nothing on this thing. Its a totally different level. Hell, the jog dial alone can do what the powermate does, and that leaves a 15 level programmable outer right and 5 buttons to play with. go read my review

i just started a thread in the mac forum for the same thing. probably should have started it here though. I am going to use an iPac keyboard emulator from ultimarc and an 8 way alps encoder and a few momentary button switches. i want it to look more like the audi mmi system. there is a thread about that on here but without the 8 way function.

                    http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...&highlight=mmi

i plan on using the joystick function of the alps encoder and using mousekeys. that way i can program the iPac to use the number keys and the joystick inputs to control the cursor. i would love to share some ideas with you

Shameless bump/plug again, but did you see the mouse in my first links on this post? Only four buttons, but a clickable encoder input and a ball for navigation too... and it's cheap enough to have no qualms about hacking apart
