  • Steering Wheel Thumb Keyboard

Does anyone know of a steering wheel thumb keyboard...

I'm thinking of a two piece mini keyboard. one half of the keyboard attaches to the left side of the steering wheel, the other attaches to the right side.

Ideally wireless(bluetooth, IR, or RF) and backlit.

Next time you are in your car driving, imainge it.. it feels pretty natural typing with your thumbs.

It would be easy...but why would you type when you're driving...???

No such thing exists as far as I know, but if you insist, you could make one yourself, although I'd still recomend a steering wheel control module. The Focus has one. Isn't it enough?

Typing at stoplights / when i am pulled over. currently i got a full size desktop wireless keyboard sitting on the backseat. I use it for entering addresses for GPS and searching the net.

Too each his own, but thos things should be done while parked.
Anyway, you could use a minikeyboard placed somewhere.

It would be kinda cool to have something like THIS but wireless so that you don't wrap the damn wires around the column when you turn the corner. You could either mount it ON the face of the wheel (if you're willing to live without the airbag) or into the face of the wheel. I think that'd actually be pretty cool. And he's right, I can't remember the number of times I've wanted to type in an address (usually while sittin at a red light or before pullin outta the parkin space) without havin to reach over to the damn keyboard. It'd be much easier if the damn thing were right in front of me.

With one of those it wouldn't have to be some big production to input an address, like 2 to 5 seconds to enter it on yer steering wheel.

I know there was one that's usb (not wireless dammit) that I've seen in a recent post (last couple months) but I couldn't find it with a cursory search.

It would be cool if someone would come up with a usb device that converts a non-wireless item into wireless...plug your usb (whatever) into this wireless adapter and it transmits the inputs to the reciever which is plugged into the usb port of your computer.

Or for all I know, that already exists.

OK. This got me kind of curious. The answer I finally came to was...THIS

It's one of those one-handed shift-key kinda keyboards where for half the letters you have to hit a shift-key of some sort to get em (think key-combinations). The beauty of this unit is that it's bluetooth and (from the reviewers) fairly easy to set up.

            Kinda 'spensive tho.

I wonder how long it would take to learn how to type on one of those things

I am ALL ABOUT this split keyboard idea.

Ive seen all sorts of mini keyboard... bluetooth, backlit, etc etc..

but none that are split for mounting each half on opposite sides of the steering wheel.

Umm. Kinda an expensive idea, but if you get two of those frogpads, you could probably make yourself a split keyboard...kinda a funky layout though.

there yah go, stick a touchscreen in the wheel

I can't imagine a way to pull off what you want, short of taking two thumboards & installing on each side, then covering the inner half of each keyboard, end result can appear as half & half, don't think that'd be to cool to type on though, but this is very do-able really, if you wanted it that way

to me it is a must to have a keyboard at your fingertips whenever desired.... touchscreen keyboards suck & I'm doing stuff on my computer almost constantly, I even built a gyration wireless keyboard into a steering wheel once, it was fantastic for the short time I drove that car before replacing it..., but my new car has an airbag that I wanted to keep, so I now have a backlit keyboard in my visor

to me this is the best solution..., sure doing a ctl-alt-del on the belt parkway may not be that intuative, but you don't have to do that too often....

if I had it to do over I would consider a wireless bluetooth keyboard, that can be ejected to use in your lap or on your steering wheel for heavy sessions while parked, writing a novel overhead makes you feel like a chimp after a while

they have yet to make an illuminated bt keyboard, which is really necissary to me, so the zippy el-610 is the next best thing in the visor.....
