  • XBOX USB Receiver??

SO, I want to add a steering wheel remote to my car pc.

I have a 96 Eddie Bauer explorer, which does not have steering wheel controls.

I saw the Jensen IR20 on the forums, and it looked promissing.

However, I'm not crazy about spending $50 for a UIRT to receive the IR signals from the jensen.

(As i understand it, you can not use IrDA devices to reciever from this remote, and I do not have any serial ports free)

So, I started thinking that there had to be a cheap IR reciever out there, and remembered that XBOX has a DVD kit that has a USB IR reciever.

Well, XBOX version of USB anywa.

Sure enough, someone has figured out how to solder up this reciever to act as an input device for windows.

The guy who came up with the idea has info and drivers on his site

    http://dlangenberg.googlepages.com/diycomputerremote

But, I want to know if one of you smart cookies could come up with a way to decode IR signals from non-XBOX DVD remotes (ie. the Jensen IR20) with this very cheap and widely available "USB" IR reciever??

Or, should i just open up the pocketbook and get the UIRT.

    Thanks,

    Sean

the reciever is just a usb receiver, all you have to do, is get a USB male plug, attach it to the proper wires in the xbox ir reciever, then have some program to interpret the signal recieved, there is a website out there that shows you

but i dont remember it +_+

IF the xbox receiver is recognized properly by windows, then you hsould be able to use Girder to interpret the signals and control the computer using girder.

I have the same jensen remote, I just built the receiver for like $10 in parts. You can use a serial to usb adapter if you need to. http://www.lirc.org/receivers.html

Right, I get that. But, will the xbox IR reciever detect the IR signals from the Jensen, or only the xbox dvd remote??

One way to find out. From my understanding, universal controls have 2 iR LEDs. So say you've got a 50/50 chance that it'll work with the Jensen.
