  • mounting laptop in footwell??

hi everyone, i have had a bit of a read in the FAQ's and etc. and wanted to know if something could be done. I want to mount a laptop in the drivers footwell, to the left, up against the trans tunnel, on some sort of mounting, so that i can reach the CD drive when i need to, and also be able to remove it from the mounting so that i can use the keyboard when needed. Is this going to be possible??

It's possible. Why wouldn't it be?

But I would consider getting a USB drive and a hub. That way you can put the laptop under the seat or hidden out of the way.

My only concern would be having the heat blasting on it there in the winter - but I don't know where you live or if that is a concern for you.
But I agree with Bugabyte - regardless it would be nicer to have it out of the way.

i live in western australia. My reason for mounting it there is that i would be able to use the keyboard on the laptop when i needed to. I have a wagon, so i cant really put it anywhere in the boot without it getting in the way of stuff i put in there, and where it isnt obvious to thieves

I don't think the heater would be much of an issue living in WA where you'd use it for maybe 7 days (?) per year.

I'd put a shelf in the passenger footwell and stick the laptop there. Get yourself an external keyboard (wireless if you can spare the cash) and yeah, get a USB optical drive too.

I would be worried about putting my foot through the screen or similar damage. I guess if you can reach the optical drive it must be higher than I imagine though. I still would put it under the seat or perhaps in a custom box trimmed out to match the boot. As for keyboard there are plenty of wireless devices on the market, some which are small enough to be hidden away when not in use. Perhaps on the sun visor?

Also, if you put it in the drivers footwell, would you be able to adjust the seat forward if someone short needs to drive the car?

I don't personally think heat is that big of an issue, having air moving over the case, or 100 degree air (at the max I would assume, mine goes up to 90) from the vents isn't that bad, that is still cooler than overheating range. I have mine under the passanger seat, and even with the heat on as high as it can go, have not had a problem with the computer. With a hot car in the summer, I haven't had a problem either, if you are really worried, just don't turn it on right away (put a power switch in, extremely easy).

you could use lots of Velcro to mount it... I used sticky-backed velcro when I was first testing my pc in my car. Worked beautifully. Need a lot of it tho. But ideal if you want to be able to put your laptop in the car (reasonably) secured and take it out lots

Worked for me anyway (and still does for devices and cables! )
