  • UMPC Samsung Q1 - New T/S Laptop Device

Has anyone seen the new Samsung Q1? It looks AWESOME! Its basically an entire computer minus a keyboard and disc drive. Heres a link to a CeBit video review:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...5&q=samsung+q1

What I would love to find out is exactly what version of Windows is it running... Because I think it would be great to have all of the "Origami" features like Grafitti and the newly styled OSD Keyboard in our carputers.... If anybody knows, please chime in....

Either way, I thought this was awesome and I wanted to show you guys... I seen it in person at my local Frys Electronics store for around $800 USD I think it was... Definitly worth it, but way to pricey for me.....

Similar devices have been brought up. Search for Origami.

All the features of Origami are just softwre. There's no reason why you couldn't load that particular piece of software into your current XP-based system.
IMHO, that stylized OSK would be a pain on anything other than the Origami... Maybe not... Of course, I don't like those 'ergonomic' split keyboards, either.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

My dad has one, it’s a cool looking computer but it’s really annoying to use.

While that is true, its all software that makes that thing "cool". I think that it would be better if it was all apart of the OS instead of a third party app. Because in my eyes (I could be very wrong) but in my eyes the way it would work is even if your in a front-end like MediaCar or RoadRunner you could still use the origami features seemlessly....

Plus, I liked the way the front end looked in that video, the way everything kinda moved and such... It looked alot like Media Center Edition (MCE) but it was different.

          Q1 at Fry's.

I saw the Q1 in Fry's on Thursday. I stopped and played with it for about ten minutes. At $1089 it was a little more then an impulse buy for me. It is however just about right on. Quick... Internet Explorer snapped open, word pad snapped open, had to look around a bit to see how to atctivate the on screen keyboard. Found there are hot keys for that (ability to configure it any way you would want). It has a good set of ports and could run a GPS and Iguidance with out a problem and probably all of the CarPC applications.
I did not hear the output of the 2 watt speakers because it was hooked up to an external amp (usually found over on the Ipod asile) and the MP3 output was great. Anyway, 900MHz low voltage Celron cpu, 512MB memory, 40GB hard drive, WIFi + ethernet RJ45, 2 USB 2 ports, 15 pin VGA port and then the 800x480 bright display. If it had been about $700 I would own one today. You would need an external USB optical drive or a network to get applications onto it.

I am seriously thinking about getting one of these. My only question is how can I setup the UMPC to automatically turn on with the ignition.

Any ideas? I don't want to modify the device using a hardware solution such as a wire that hooks to the button ... and so on.

You might ask why change from my lilliput touch screen and built in Car PC? The UMPC has more versatility, more reliable touch screen (my lilliput touch screen just failed the other day). Plus I can us the UMPC on the airplane to watch movies and other daily use.

P.S. Turning off is no problem, I already made software that looks for when the device external power supply is disconnected it will turn off the computer/hibernate/suspend.

I know there was a program that activates shutdown with pins 4 and 8 on your comm port were shorted out for a second... But the UMPC doesnt have a comm port. (at least not that I know of)

I think they make USB to Serial port converter cables... But I dont know if that would work or not?

Either way, that would be really cool... Imagine playing with your carputer on the way to a resturant, and taking down with you into the resturant.... Or anywhere for that matter... how cool would that be? Good stuff... Good stuff indeed

Keep in mind that the shutdown is EASY. The real problem is how to boot up on ignition power on? Without a hardware mod. Still looking for ideas.

Perhaps the bios has a resume state option in the bios? I know on desktop PCs if the power shuts down you can select to have the PC stay off when the power comes back or restart windows. With that it would effectively shut down / start up with the car. However, as you'll be taking the UMPC with you when you leave the car or hiding it away so it doesn't get stolen pressing a button should be that much extra effort

I am wondering if there is a bios setting for resume on external power. I guess I could download the manual and check.

I would like to install it more creatively. I would modify the car mount they sell to make it look like it is permanently installed but it could be removed with little effort.

I know alot of guys use laptops... And they have some kind of startup/shutdown solution... I bet if you do some searching you'll find something usefull.

As for mounting it, I think the best idea you could do is have a make shift cradle that has hinges. So when you slide the machine in place, you push it back towards the dash and it seats perfectly. Then, to take it out, you pulll it away from the dash, it moves on the hinges, and you pull it out of the cradle. Get what im saying?

My question is how do you get into the bios without a keyboard? lol hehe

The Q1 looks like a neat device and nothing would make me happier than owning one.. but I think it's really not a great design for semi-permanent car mounting.. based on the fact that there's no actual DOCK available for the Q1.

Sure you can get a "car mount" but that's all it is. You still have to manually plug and unplug every device you want attached.

                            Very good point....

But, maybe you could "rig" up a dock to the point where it would just set in a docking cradle type device... If all the ports for power and such are on the bottom, why wouldnt you be able to build a dock that has all of the ports molded inside? - Just a thought...

I had thought about that as well, however, fabbing your own dock wouldn't work well because the connections are as follows: 1xusb & audio on left side of the device, and power, vga, 1xusb on the right side.

                              http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....ngleView&h=387

Furthermore, given that the device is 9" wide, now you're talking about needing about 11" available width in your dash in order to accomodate connections..

Perhaps the Q2 generation will be more suited to our needs.

edit: Now the Q1's USB keyboard.. looks like it would be perfect for in-car use
