  • Touch screens work with laptops?

Do the kinds of touch screens you guys use (Lilliput, Xenarc, DWW, etc.) generally work if attached to a laptop computer, or are they designed more for custom car pc computers? Maybe a stupid question, but one of the basic things I haven't found covered in the FAQ's. Thanks.

My Lilli was setup first on my laptop, then on my desktop and then back to my laptop used for the carpc.. a monitor is a monitor for the most part. They 'typically' aren't for 'custom' setups, but most of us use them in that fashion

Yep, I use a LinITX touchscreen with my laptop. Just another monitor as far as the machine is concerned. The touchscreen will be supplied with drivers that allow the touch part of it to work.

You may need to make a BIOS or Windows configuration change to tell the laptop to output to an external monitor.

        Short answer is yes.

Longer answer is, there are two pieces to a touchscreen monitor. They actually operate independently. First, the monitor. If your laptop works with an external VGA monitor, you can use a Lili or Xenarc, etc.

The second screen is the touch screen. This is a glass overlay with pressure sensitive film that is included with monitors labelled as "touchscreen". It comes built in to the monitor and commonly hooks up to the computer using a USB connection. You load a driver and it generally works fine.

I've not heard of reports of any laptops that won't work with touchscreens, however, you'll need to either make the touchscreen monitor the main display or mirror your laptop display to it. Otherwise, you won't be able to control the OS because you won't be able to touch the bits you want to select.
