  • Notion Ink Adam pre-order - PixelQi display option!

So today is the day the pre-order is open, first for some blog posters in the Notion website, then for the rest of us. (Endgaget link).

I'm very interested in this, specially the PixelQi option (mp3car thread here).

    10.1" WSVGA (1024 x 600)
    Optional Pixel Qi display:
    Transmissive, transflective,
    and reflective modes

    Multi-touch
    Matte finish
    Anti glare coating
    Scratch resistant
    Finger print resistant
FINALLY a tablet that cares for direct sunlight readabilty (not just media playing). I want this.

    Some more specs, among them:

    Size+Weight

    Thickness: ~14 mm
    Width: 191 mm
    Length: 269 mm
    Weight: ~1.6 pounds
    System on Chip
    NVIDIA Tegra 250
    Dual Core Cortex A-9
    ULP GPU
Dual core Tegra, not bad at all. 2xUSB 2.0 Host (just plug your 2TB USB drive), SD Card, Wifi and wifi+3G option. I don't care for the battery since I plan to mount this in my car...nothing will beat the iPad is my bet.

GPS, Accelerometer, all that crap. Here's the pricing:

If you remember I explained that itís possible that we would be able to cut the price of one of the variants further. So here is the confirmation! You know we have 6 variants : LCD (wi-fi only), LCD + 3G -900 series, LCD + 3G -850 series, Transflective (Wi-Fi only), Transflective + 3G -900 series, Transflective + 3G -850 series.

Earlier we told you that the first version will start at $399. But now the LCD Wi-Fi version will start at $375.33 and 3G version at $425.33 (for limited period?). Transflective version (Pixel Qi) will start at $499.45 for Wi-Fi only and 3G variants at $549.99 (2 variants in 3G, 900 series and 850 series which takes the variant numbers to 6!). (For specifications please see our website).
I would be in for the wifi+3G, with the pixelQi display. But no word on shipping yet, I heard Jan 6th? I don't know what's the difference between the 850 and the 900 series yet, but I suspect I'll want the 900...

Other than my concern about this being vapor hardware - why not one real picture, just 3D renderings? - I'm pretty excited about this.

850 and 900 series relates to the frequencies that the 3g operates under I believe, so the 850 will support things like the Telstra NextG in Australia on the 850mhz, while the 900 would run under the other groups that use the 900mhz area of the spectrum.

Other than that I think they would be the same.

Yes, you're right, I saw that a bit later. 850 would work in the US too, I believe.

They claim on their website that 7" screens will be out first half of 2011 with the possibility of having samples at CES. No mention of if they will have touch screen models.

I am working on a cable only, and complete controller solution for the PQ LCD.

I have one up and running, but I don't know what the demand would be.

Since the LCD can be purchased separately,
I have been contacted by 2 people looking for LVDS cables to interface the PQ LCD to different boards.

                  Any interest?

I am interested but I don't think the 10.1'' will fit in my car.

Check out the makezine board as well a few people were also asking for cable + controller.

So if I understand correctly, you would provide a controller with an HDMI input for their Pixel Qi panel, so I would just have to add the capacitive touch and the enclosure. Would have a button to turn off the backlight too?

Yes, I would be interested, definitely.

Well, yes and no. I didn't mention HDMI becasue I do not know yet which controller I am going to use.

Ideally, the best choice is to go with a controller that has EDID support.

A PCTS touch solution is in the works as well.

I just ordered 20 panel side cables tonight.

I will look into an on/off toggle for the backlight.

Update on Engadget today regarding Pixel Qi screens:

The characteristic most often associated with Pixel Qi screens -- aside from their prized daylight-readable quality -- up to this point has been scarcity. Hoping to correct that supply shortage, Mary Lou Jepsen's team has today announced a partnership with Taiwanese manufacturer Chunghwa Picture Tubes to, well, produce some picture tubes. Apparently, "the teams have been working together quietly all fall" and now they're ready to make things official, while also announcing that three new panels will be coming to market at various points during 2011. The first of those, a 7-inch screen with a 1024 x 600 resolution, is set to make its debut at CES in early January, with mass production coming in the second quarter of the year. Another note of interest is the tally of three million Pixel Qi displays shipped over the past three years -- let's hope we can double that number through 2011, eh?

Thanks. I said hdmi but dvi would work just as well. AFAiK you have to turn off the backlight for full reflective functionality.
