  • ASUS dual core Honeycomb tablet gorgeous IPS screen, $399.00 soon

    Asus,

This one is going to kill the Motorola Xoom, between $200 and $400 less (3G version).

ASUS Launches the Eee Pad Transformer

    Hands on first look:

Soon on BestBuy for $399 (Endgaget); hopefully soon on Amazon pre-order (no taxes): (link removed by Bestbuy).

Can't wait to see it, the IPS screen according to the above has 178 degrees viewing angle...no color shifting as per IPS tech. You can't have that on a $350+ Xenarc/Lilliput, ever. No room? Make it happen! I say...

Of course, there is also the SD card, HDMI out, 16h battery life () for when you take it out of the car onto the airplane. Asus did a great job on the Boe-Hydis sunlight viewable screen on the EESlate E121 tablet PC, I think they're going to be a serious Android contender now.

I'm really digging the $599 7" RIM Playbook or the $539 (?) Galaxy Tab 8.9" too, but this one is so much cheaper, will see what happens.

I suspect the combo features+price on the Asus will be a hit with xda developers.

Case in point, this thing has been rooted even before launch! (endgadget)

I know, it's big. I really wanted something smaller now, 7", dual core.

*lol* I really like the HTC Flyer coming out, and I'm due for my 1 yr upgrade from Sprint in June. Only thing is, I don't want one on contract, it isn't needed, but off contract it is rumored to cost ~$800. And I refuse to drop that kind of coin for a tablet of any kind.

Can anyone confirm the $399 price? This thing is selling in shops in Hong Kong now for HK$3980, which is around $500 for the 16G WiFi version. I think in Europe it is around Euro 395, so $399 would be a vry good price.

I've look at the reai thing, its actually feel quite heavy, but the construction is quite good. I didn't buy one because there is no USB port on the PAD itself. If you need USB they are in the keyboard.

Been wanting one of these since it was at CES last year. I think the 10" screen is about the perfect size.

$800 for a single core and no honeycomb tablet? Don't make me laugh - not even the Xoom is worth that much. People won't pay more than $350 for the wifi only version. With Froyo on it, I'd rather get the Galaxy tab, which is now selling for $349.99 (wifi only, but I would use tether), just got an email from Samsung.

There were plenty of ads on Bestbuy, Amazon and Newegg advertising the Asus Transformer, basic version, for $399.00 but they got pulled waiting for the official announcement. Anything less will be a disappointment and people will in turn gravitate towards the new thinner than the iPad2 Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9.

Since I already have an iPad, and since the iPad is basically a family toy (400 apps on it now!), I need another tablet to take it with me anywhere. And I really don't like to hold the iPad one handed, and also it's much more difficult to install one in a car, so I'm looking for something smaller. I'm looking at ebay prices for the Elocity 7 and GTab, and people are paying crazy prices for those tablets. Apple is winning the price war big time.

You gotta love Asus: Asus releases Google Android Honeycomb source code.

On the support page for Asus' flagship hybrid tablet, anyone can download the kernel source code for the Honeycomb operating system. It is named Version V8.2.2.6 on the website and is a 97MB file. This is despite Google not releasing the code and also delaying the release of the operating system to developers.
Google has released the software development kit for Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which it made available at the end of February.
Asus is playing by the rules here, complying with the GNU General Public License (GPL) which, in simple terms, states that it must make the source code available that goes with the device.
I have no doubt in my mind that Asus is going to support and open this thing to developers, and this will make this tablet the first one to get attention from XDA. If Asus include tools to overclock the thing, I won't be surprised...

You're preaching to the choir about the size, especially in a mobile environment. I always thought the iPad was too massive for car use. In day to day usage, it might be good, but mobile....that thing is huge. The 7" variety are pretty much just right....not too big, not too small. I've been enjoying the heck out of mine, and so have my passengers *lol*.

Yep. I can see a very small phone in the future, and a very thin, 7" tablet with me instead at all times.

Realese date: April 26th. It's sold out in the UK already. 16h battery life with keyboard dock, two full sized USBs and one full size SD card on the dock too (plus micro SD on the tablet itself), so lots of storage options.

Looks like it's going to be a hard to get device here too.

Oh, yeah, and here's the Anandtech review:

The Eee Pad comes with a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display whose characteristics are remarkably similar to that of the iPad 2. Max brightness, black level and thus contrast are all near identical to the iPad 2.
There's simply no excuse for a tablet to ship without a top notch display, and here ASUS doesn't disappoint. I wasn't impressed by the Xoom's display but ASUS fixed that problem completely.
