  • Let's talk audio playback real quick. EQ vs Pre-Amp vs 4-Channel

    Really seriously looking in to picking up a HTC Evo View, and installing in my Altima. I want to make it somewhat portable in that I can also use it in my Saturn Outlook when i use that for road trips (but i'll just use a window or visor mount in that)

    One thing I really need more info on is the best method for the actual audio playback.

    Thus far, i've seen people use:

    * separate pre-amp's (The other altima that has done this, forget user's name)
    * equalizers
    * standard 4-channel amp's.

    I have a standard 4-channel amp, along with a sub amp. I only have factory speakers installed right now.

    So my question(s) are.. what is the best solution for my scenario?

    * I like the idea of the 4-channel amp, since i wouldn't have to buy anything else.. but Is there a way I can still install subs, and listen to them off of the tablet as well as the 4-channel? Would an EQ be best here, so I can use both amp's?

    * I'm assuming I could use an EQ to support both amp's.. but If using an EQ, does any ole' EQ work or do I need a pre-amp EQ?

    * Since I still have factory speakers installed, what is best way to listen to the speakers from the 4-channel if I go this route? Re-run all new audio cables to the amp in the trunk? This is what i would do if i installed aftermarket..

    * And lastly, how is the audio quality going all these different routes and which might give the best playback? How can I eliminate any noise (I am a sound quality guy through and through)..? How can I avoid charging/engine noise with the device consistently being plugged in to a power source while using? For example, i use my phone and ipod now with an aftermarket Eclipse deck. But when I am charging either device while listening, i get that ****ty engine whine. UGH, hate it. It is a must that i avoid this.

    Sorry for all the questions,.. perhaps we can use this as a way to build a sticky as these seem like basics to overcome..

    A pre-amp (or EQ with pre-amp) will boost the voltage levels to the amps, producing cleaner sound.
    In my mind, an EQ that can take simple L/R stereo and separate channels to F/R & sub makes for simplified wiring from the PC.

    The whining noise is a ground loop. Solution? Ground your goodies well.

      wait, your a sq guy through and through, yet your still running the stock speakers?!?!? i am starting to believe your definition of sq is a little low..(these days, it seems a speaker emitting noise counts as 'sq'....)

      for a sq build, i would recommend a eq with a built-in preamp to provide a better line voltage to the amps, and also allow the tweaking that all sq need to flatten the sometimes nasty curves that popup.

      as far as the whining noise, i have seen GL's show up in all sorts of systems-- all the way from installs that took very specific care to avoid it, and to installs that just threw gear in the trunk.. in short, don't worry about it until it happens. focus on installing all your gear correctly, and if a GL should happen to crop up, then troubleshoot it.. there is just no procedure that i have seen that has a 100% success rate in avoiding the dreaded GL....

        I just got the car.. I've not had it but a few months.

        I have a full plan in place, but the tablet project is first. Only thing i've done this far is wire for both amps and i have my Eclipse AVN5500 in there. It's so outdated, the maps are worthless. $300 for a new dvd (or $250 for a tablet, HMMM). So needless to say, the projects are all pending this first.

        What brands/model EQ+preamp are you guys recommending or suggesting? Just so i have a something to base my search and research off of?

            ok (it took me less then a month before i couldn't take the stock setup in my car!)

            yes, that clarion unit looks pretty good-- i have recommended it in the past-- and while i don't have any personal experience with that unit, i do have a clarion 3-way x-over that has similar features and works good(even survived 2 amp killing's when i was 'troubleshooting')..

              I run an AudioControl Three.1. Pricey, but well worth it, IMHO.

                I'm right there with you. I had the Eclipse installed within about 2 weeks. Only reason for the delay was waiting for the OEM dash to arrive in the mail. It's killing me having all the wiring done (except to the speakers) for the amps and my gear sitting in the garage.. but I want to get this figured out first.

                That Clarion looks like a great deal. I'm most likely going to grab it.

                I DO have an AudioControl 4XS. Does this act as a pre-amp at all, or is it simply just an electronic crossover? Was given to me by somebody, really not sure if it even works.

                  it looks like that has some sort of preamp in it, but is mostly a electronic x-over..

                    OK. I'll stick to something like the Clarion.

                    How are the mini-eq's? Any good ones out there? Will I still have two input/three or four output?

                    I can fit the mini-eq better in my dash, in a hidden spot, rather then having to fab something for the 1/2 DIN EQ's.

                        Nothing specific yet. Just a general question really..i guess.

                        PPI eqs good also?

                          i know they used to be really good, but last i heard, they moved manufacturing over to china, so the audio purists are less fond of the newer versions.. i doubt they are much different though..
