  • Possible: Visteon/Directed controlled by Android?

So as of Android 3.1, your device can be USB host. So I'm thinking it should therefore be possible to fashion up an App that can talk to Mitch's cable (FTDI serial) and control the radio.

Is it possible? Is anyone up to the task?

with driver issues, etc. it would honestly be easier to use a cheap, small windows backend and stream any audio/video from that. since carpc is all but dead on traditional PCs, I wish someone would take the reigns with tablets already.

I would agree. Compounded by needing the same hardware (radio + cable) and likely a library. I've seen one but at $99 just for the library, I imagine not many are interested in grabbing it just to make us an app.

EDIT: Here is the library to which I refer (for reference).

That's exactly what I've been looking for. I wonder if it will be distributed.

FTDI has android drivers + java code to get it all going, just need a developer...
                video looks promising...
                -Thanks

One problem for car use is that OTG host mode doesn't necessarily allow of charging AND using host mode depending on the tablet. Galaxy Tab 2 does not.

$99!! There is a free open source driver for FTDI https://github.com/ksksue/FTDriver which works perfectly fine.

Prolific also provide free Android drivers http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowPr...id=230&pcid=41 .. though I haven't used it. I have modified Ksksue's driver to work with both FTDI and Prolific chips. I will host it somewhere if anyone needs it.

you could control it over Ethernet....
all you need is a little hardware...Ethernet to serial, well.. the tricky part of this is DTR and RTS control
then you could forget the whole usb thing

I would like to have it. Mostly so if I encounter someone that will build something at least I won't have to go searching.

timur has otg + charging working for the nexus 7 crowd. that's actually where that video came from (his thread on rootz)

Since it is a small java file, I have attached the FTDI/PL2303 Driver file as a text file to this post.

If you need serial or i2c connection, you can avoid host mode altogether with FT311D chip http://www.ftdichip.com/Android.htm . However, it hasn't quite caught on.
