  • 2013 Kia Forte Koup tablet install details

    Introduction

Hey guys! While I'm not a regular on this forum, I've recently installed an Android tablet on my 2013 Kia Forte Koup and I figured I'd show it off and provide whatever little information I can.

The unit I chose to install (temporarily) is an off-brand, 7 inch Chinese knock-off labeled as a GPS running Android 4.0.4. I've opted to install a cheap unit for the time being as I'm not sure how well - if at all - a tablet would survive Quebec's wildly variable weather. It'll be seeing everything from -30c to 30c within a year and I'm looking forward to seeing how well it'll deal with it.

    The installation

I was lucky enough that I didn't have to fabricate anything as a 7 inch GPS housing was available from South Korea for under 100$. All I had to do was sacrifice my clock/outside temp/airbag status console and replace it with the specialized housing after assembling it. I drilled on hole on the top to give me access to the power button as the tablet cannot be removed without dissembling a large portion of the dash.

Power is provided to the unit via a cigarette lighter adapter; a solution I'd like to change down the line. The tablet's only power input is via a Mini-B USB port so I'm not too sure how I could bypass the adapter altogether.

Audio is provided to the car via FM modulation built into the tablet. I usually leave it on speaker mode as the tablet's not usually used to play music but rather serves as a GPS, browser and application machine. Unfortunately, this model does not have Bluetooth and hence cannot use Torque. If all goes well, my next unit will certainly have the function, though as it'd be awesome to have available.

Wifi is provided to the unit via my mobile phone coupled with Tasker profiles (explained below).

    Tasker and general usage

Power off: Turn on Airplane Mode, Set screen timeout to 7 seconds (as short as it can be set), Mute, Shut Up
Power on, any source: Turn off Airplane Mode, Set screen timeout to 23 hours, Volume on, Brightness to maximum

I use a simple power widget to control various functions like brightness and volume.

If I'm leaving the car for an extended period of time, I reach in and power off the tablet rather than let it go to sleep to save on power. It boots up rather quickly anyway.

On my Android phone, I toggle Wifi Tethering with the Bluetooth connection. My stock radio has built-in BT so whenever I get into the car and connect my phone, Wifi tethering is enabled for the tablet to use. It's a simple solution but one that's been working pretty flawlessly so far.

    Applications

I'm not currently using any car-specific UIs, though I have started working on my own since I'm a UI/UX designer by trade. I'd need to find a decent programmer to get this off the ground, though. Here's some screenshots for fun.

design looks great...very very clean. and i'm not sure how badly you'd need a programmer when you could just use a combination of UCCW and dvr to achieve what you have mocked up.

I'm planning on some functions that extend beyond the basic shortcut functionality but I'll definitely look into those and see if I can work something out. Cheers!
