  • Tablet to replace HU - advice needed

    howdy folks.

    i have recently seriously thought about sticking a tablet in my car to replace my headunit. (which i haven't got at present) now i've been doing alot of research and watching a couple of tutorial vids, and i think i have the basics down. (i got alittle confused in the research if im honest)
    i just wanted some input to tell me if im right or wrong before i start the install;

    this is what i have come up with;

    tablet - 12v cig-usb charger - 3.5mm to RCA cable - 5-band equaliser - to the rest of my system.

    regarding the power, i'll be using the standard usb cable that comes with the tablet, which i'll plug into a usb-cig adaptor... what im alittle concerned with is charge, ideally i want to be using the tablet for music playback, satnav, wifi etc... so wifi and gps will be on pretty much all the time. is this possible or am i dreaming? i read alot of threads and articles about using fast-charger or 3amp chargers to run stuff all the time, can anyone clarify that?

    the other issue is the audio jack to equaliser, now during my research i have come across loads of installs that have just connected the EQ to tablet and other that have connected pre-amps to the tablet and then a 4ch to the pre-amp. what i haven't come across is... tablet to pre-amp to EQ to amps.

    now the reason i want to know this is, my current install is big, 5,000 wrms... x4 12" subs, x2 6x9's, x4 6.5", x2 4" bullet tweeters, x6 amps (4 mono's, 1 4ch and 1 2ch) and x1 equaliser.
    my entire system is hooked to the EQ and then was to my Headunit. now im thinking that i just connect the tablet audio jack straight to the EQ and then extend the volume control wires from inside the EQ upto the dash near the tablet for volume control.
    my thinking is that i do away with a pre-amp, i know HU's have amps inside them, but i don't use the stock audio wiring looming which i assume the HU amps, and when it comes to signal loss etc... the EQ pumps power down the line anyway and plus i already controlling the whole signal range.

    so any thoughts and advice guys?
    should i just hook straight to the EQ and bypass a pre-amp?
    what can you tell me regarding the usb power and charging?

    Power is going to a bit dependent on the tablet. For instance, the Asus Vivotab won't charge when draws power at a rate which is greater than the re-charge rate of the battery. So adding a higher-powered charger isn't necessarily going to mean you can run it without discharging your tablet.

        re power: yes you can do what you want ,if you buy an app called tasker you can set it to start playing music ,turn on gps ,wifi and any thing else you want when power is applied and it will also turn off these to save power when you turn off ignition and it can put your tablet in stand buy so it uses next to no power.

        if your hu has an aux in you could just hide you hu and plug in the aux ,this also helps if you have steering controls for volume ect but it wont change tracks

          Re power: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the intent of the original question was: can I use my tablet with all it's goodies turned on and still have the battery charging while it's operating in the car. My original answer stands. Some tablets "may" be able to deliver all of those services and still provide a net positive charge to the battery, but some won't. The Asus won't, and says so in its manual. Tablet screens draw a LOT of power, as do Bluetooth, Wifi and GPS. Running them all (especially a bright screen in daylight) at the same time with a media app, a Nav app and maybe an OBD app, and I think you're probably asking a lot from almost any tablet. Tasker is great for handling the on/of stuff, but it's not going to reduce the amount of power your tablet uses when everything is operating.

          Best thing to do is test. Turn everything on, attach your preferred charging device, and take a look at the battery level. See if it charges while you're using the device under real-world conditions. If it works, great. If not, figure out how you can reduce the load until it does (if that's possible).
