  • How to awaken/turn on Nexus 7 without using the power button?

    Hi,

I have a Nexus 7 flush mounted into my '92 Volvo 960 Wagon. It works fine until it turns off or goes to sleep. Because the power button is behind the dash, I then have to take the dash panel out to get it turned back on. How to I solve this? I've tried soldering an external switch to the motherboard to have an external power switch, which works, but I worry about the strength of the connection given how tiny the solder joints are. How is everyone else doing it? Thanks! -Ted

I will have to deal with this same issue soon with a galaxy tab from what I have read a lot of people are using an app called tasker
There is more to using tasker but maybe others can chime in since its new to me

Tasker can turn on the screen in many diffrent ways..i assume the nexus has a charger attached. ..if this comes on with the cars ignition tasker can be set to turn on the display and keep it on untill the car gets turned off...set the nexus to never lock the screen and it will work a treat...other ways tasker can work are magnets, bluetooth connections, environmental variables and many many more...tasker seems a bit complicated at first but once you have a play with it its amazing

Yep use Tasker, if you tablet gets power from the ACC then you can configure tasker to keep the screen on as long as the tablet is charging.

But then what do I do if the battery in the tablet dies completely? This car doesn't get driven very often, and even in sleep mode the battery dies after about 3-4 days. Tasker can't turn the tablet on if it's completely off...

I found a possible solution... You can change the bios settings to turn the tablet on whenever it sees power. I'll try it out sometime this week and report back.

EDIT: This worked perfectly. Unlock your bootloader and type "fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0". Now, even if the tablet is completely turned off, when you apply power it automatically boots to the home screen. No power button needed ever again.

Wanted to add that you can use a magnet on the front of the screen to turn it on as well. It's how the smart folio cases work. Obviously you found your solution already and this method only works in sleep not powered off.

To the best of my knowledge, a magnet can't turn on a tablet that is off, only wake one up that is sleeping...

I didn't actually find a solution yet. I realized after I did that post that the tablet isn't charging, even though it will turn on. Someone apparently wrote a script to toggle the mode that solves the problem, but I haven't tried that yet.

why not just drill a small hole ,small enough to put a stylus through to the power button

Indeed OP from power-off there is nothing that will power-on the tablet except the actual power button. Tasker will only turn a screen back on NOT power-on the tablet. I'm in the planing stage of a tablet install and I'm debating whether to fab the tab into the dash in a way that i can remove it or hack the power button to extend it to an external button.

Won't start install till summer but in the mean time I'll be keeping an eye on this tread.

                      ^NOT TRUE^

I have also used this solution to automatically turn on my nexus 7 once the tablet receives power.

You can look for custom roms and kernels that incorporate knock2awake or swipe2awake

you can check ebay, I have found 30000 mah batteries with usb in and usb out, one side you plug in a charger , other side you plug in the tablet, then you can configure tasker to turn on the screen/gps/wifi etc etc when your phone is detected through bluetooth

                          ebay object nr: 121209336215
