  • LG G Pad 8.3 build/design process with many questions.

I just ordered an LG G Pad 8.3 to perma mount into my car. The car is a 2005 VW Passat GLX Wagon. I'm planning to root it and use a stock version of Android 4.4.

Now I had some questions that maybe you guys would have some answers or solutions for me. The big thing I'm wondering is I want to setup the tablet so that it doesn't lock when power is supplied to it (through a relayed power connection) so that it stays on and doesn't lock or turn off the screen. But once the vehicle is off and the relay removes power to the tablet I want it to power off the screen and stay powered on via it's battery so that it can perform syncing services in the background like syncing my music collection from the house. I'm just curious if there is a way to achieve this?

Eventually things will get pretty crazy with this build, I've got a USB to I2S adapter which is going to feed a MiniSHARC from MiniDSP and then a high end dac with some other custom stuff. But for now I'm just going to focus on getting this to work the way I want. I was originally going to use an Odroid and a screen but I really wanted a nice quality 8" screen and also a tablet started to look better as it has all the GPS sensors and what not built in unlike the Odroid.

So I'm sure I'll have more questions as we move along. The tablet should be here tomorrow I believe and I still have to decide how I'm going to mount it. I'd really like to mold a pod into the top of my dash above the center console and try and make it look as stock as possible like it was supposed to be there, I have to take it and hold it up there and see if I can work that out though without it looking too abnormal.

Ok, looks like Tasker and maybe Autosleeper might be able to handle most of this for me.

The intelligent DC-DC converter on the mp3car.com store can be jumper selected to supply clean 5V output for your tablet, and will turn on and off with ignition. Also you can jumper select it to delay turning off after ignition is off for a configurable period of time, to charge the tablet's battery. I have had great results with them.

        Thanks I'll look into that.

Here is where I'd like to put the tablet. I have to decide if it's too large here or not. I want to build a whole pod that looks like it's supposed to be part of the dash and blends in nicely (possibly permanently and then getting the whole dash vinyl wrapped) so it'd look somewhat like a newer cars infotainment system.

Where the stock radio is I'm planning to put a volume/navigation knob and some quick nav buttons.

Well I'd rather not cover or modify the vents if I can help it. So I want to make sure it's not going to block the view much. It's in a VW Passat so you don't sit up as high as you do in what looks like a truck/van there lol.

With mine i was fairly commited very early in the build...vent had to go...it does however make the other 3 work really well! Yours looks like it sit there really well tho.bit of fiberglass here and there...mabee just build a pod that attaches on top.or like mine just get a replacement center dash and go from there...its very easy to do it that way as you really dont need to dissasemble the car untill your done..its well worth the effort

Yeah I want it up higher so I don't have to look away from the road so much and its in a more natural spot. This is why I ruled out the stock radio location.

Agree...standard spot is not always quite right for a touch screen.i use mine for 4x4 mapping..any lower would be no good...higher would be better but that would be the pushing legal side too much

This summer i will install a tablet in my truck and have a Samsung tab3 8.0 setup and ready to go but i made a mistake and started playing with a GPad 8.3 - Amazing display! So i bought one. Excitement was short live though because when i started to fiddle with it for installation in the truck, i found i major flaw - OTG plus charging don't work and that's a must for me.

Along those line i wanted to ask what would be you rational behind REMOVING power from the tab when the engine is shut down? I think - well, in my case - the tab would recharge more often when the car is sitting (garage, work) so i would think it would be better to supply power to the tablet when the engine is shut down. Unless you are scared to discharge the battery in the car..? is that it?

BTW, my intentions is to power the tab all the time and the only thing that will go off and come on is the display.

Did you root and use a custom rom and still on OTG charging?

My reasoning is so that there is not power draw when the car is not running, really it should last several days on battery power without the car being on anyways.

Without rooting, one or the other will work! meaning, if i enable OTG only, i can't charge the tablet which will be behind the dash, and vice-versa (if that's a word).

I'm taking some advice from some folks at XDA to see if can patch together a cable that can be switched via relay or something but what it really need is a custom Kernel to enable OTG plus charging simultaneously.

                          We'll see.

Double check the ebay link, it's giving an error. I would like to see what adapter you refer to..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201062260590...84.m1497.l2649 this one maybe? It basically has a separate cable for charging that Y's off. I had planned to root mine and install a custom rom on it anyways as I didn't want all the LG bloat on it. I bought it because it's fast enough for what I want, has a screen size that I wanted, and a very nice resolution. Also NewEgg has had them on sale the past couple weeks for 120 bucks off making them 229 dollars

Damn! That's a good price! I thought i did good on Amazon for 240.00 shipped. Maybe i should get another one so my wife will have her own to play with. LOL

Maybe something wrong with my computer cause the link still isn't working but no big deal, i have tried damn near every cable there is.

Waiting to see the progress on your worklog.
