    Of course the one extra laptop I have (Dell D600) to use as a carpc has some kind of funky power adapter that doesnt not allow me to run the laptop in a dock powered by a carnetix p1900 so I could easily remove it from the trunk whenever I wished...

    So I guess I am going to have to permenently mount the laptop on its own in the trunk and power it through the carnetix. From what I have searched on it will run the laptop but wont charge it. (is that correct?)

    So with the laptop connected to the Carnetix I am not very clear as to the laptops behavior when the car is turned on or shut off... so here are my questions...

    Does the PC automatically boot up when the ignition is turned on through Carnetix?

    Does it automatically shut down when car is off?

    If neither what do people use as a solution an external power button??

    Is there any way people know of to be able to run this laptop through the carnetix p1900 using the docking station???

    I decided to incorperate an external power switch into the laptop just so I can reboot the pc if needed from the dash .. ( and maybe to control on/off if carnetix dosent)

    When I opened up the laptop this is what I found under the power button



    Im not sure which tiny little post I need to solder the two wires to but im sure I will be able to figure it out this afternoon with a multimeter.

    I'm not sure if the Dell is the same as my HP, but without that center pin in the barrel my Centrino Duo runs like a 286.

    I had to get an auto/air adapter and I've got my carnetix p1900 connected to that and it's configured to keep a trickle to the laptop as I hooked up the switch wires and have it enter standby when switched.

      I use a Dell D800 in a docking station. I am using a Lind auto air adapter specifically for the D800. It supplies 90W, which is 4.5 amps at 20 volts which the d800 needs both docked and undocked. The center pin is the key. I dont know exactly how it works, but the adapter has the right signal to tell the computer that a correct power adapter is connected.

      If the correct power adapter is not connected, it boots up with a screen that says it cannot tell what adapter is connected. The result of this is that it cripples the processor speed to 600mhz on my 2ghz processor, which is what Sargeants is referring too. This happens both docked and undocked.

      I wired a relay to the power button in the dock, which powers on when the car is turned on. There is also an emergency power button in the dash.

        Thanks both of you this is great info .. I am tempted to go with the lind power adapter but wont that make the main output on my carnetix obsolete? The carnetix 1900 main output is 18/19/20v right? I was hoping I could use one solution to power my laptop / screen and usb hub (i have the p5v as well) I did manage to wire an external power switch through the modem phone jack on the laptop this evening.. it was really easy on the d600 ill put up some pics if anyone is interested.

          the two pins you need to solder to are 1 and 2 because these are the switch pics on this motherboard

            going from the carnetix to the auto adapter is kinda pointless, but it's working for me. my auto adapter will accept signals from 7-24v, so having the carnetix output at 18gives it the power needed for the laptop. Initially I was hoping to get around the whole 'smart pin', but that's not possible unless you can separate that IC from the adapter...

            if I didn't already purchase and install the carnetix I would have used a relay like drewbp... that's the simplist way

            I think HP is a bit more dumb than Dell when it comes to this pin.... It won't give you an error unless you're in Windows, but really I think it acts like a 286, not even a 600mhz, it's brutal.

            I would also say that pin 1 & 2 need to be soldered to make the switch work - makes sense with large the solder points. Looks like 2-6 are connected to the same area(ground) and then 1 is the power line.

              Thanks for the Great Posts! this is all very good info .. I Think I am leaning tawords going with the lind auto adapter 2045 -1342 so I will be able to utilize the dock since I am going to have to use a auto apadpter specific for the dell. So my only issue is that I dont think I can route it through the carnetix main output as the lind auto adapter accepts only 12-16v soooo .. im left with a carnetix 1900 secondary channel powering my xenarc a p5v powering my usb hub and an empty main output.. will the carnetix even operate without the main output hooked up? what else could I use the main output for?? Should I just ditch the p1900 all together? if so what should I use to power the xenarc and usb hub?

              again thanks for any responces ... im getting there... once I get a better handle on carpc install I will return the favor by sharing what I have learned with others.

                I ran into the same issues as you guys. I wanted to use my opus psu and couldn't. I ended up searching the net for ages to find an auto adapter that worked. It had to be >90w because the dock wouldn't work with the 60w adapter that I had . It also ended up costing me quite a bit as it was the only adapter on the market at the time that was a high enough output and had the correct signal so the laptop would charge. I also found that you cannot boot off the battery. You need the power plugged in to get the machine to boot while in the dock, then you can run off the battery. Why do companies like dell do stupid things like this?

                I ended up not using my opus at all and made small regulators for all of my devices and ran the auto adapter for the dock.

                  what model laptop were you tring to power when you were having those issues?

                  I Contacted Lind and they recomended I pick up the DE2045-1319 because it provides the correct voltage and signal to the dell latitude laptops for them to be able to run at full capacity even in a dock. And unlike the DE2045-1342 which I was initially concidering the 1319 accepts a wide range of input voltage (12-32v) so If I wanted to I could run the lind in between the p1900 and the laptop in the dock. kind of a waste of the main output channel since I could theoredically hook the lind right to the cars 12v but It would mean that I could use the carnetix as the main startup / shutdown controller for all the components. and down the line if I found that I wanted to do away with the p1900 I still could.

                  What do ya guys think?? I have a Diagram of my proposed setup.. I am going to revise it a little bit and Ill post it up in this thread.

                    I have a dell inspirion 8600. Without the dock it uses a 60w power pack. the minimum power when using the dock is 90w

                      Ok so here is my newbie attempt at a diagram outlining what I think will be the wiring for my carpc's Power .. I havent found to many diagrams for the p1900 wired to a laptop especially through an auto adapter. please do let me know if its incorrect.

                      I am still going to Use the P1900 as a startup / shutdown controler for the pc but since I need to run the dell through the lind auto adapter I am running from the battery to the p1900 to the lind auto adapter then to the laptop. Im not certain about the acpi wire .. is on a laptop does it go to the power button? Is it ok to have an inline momentary switch mounted in my dash to be able to reset the pc in the event of a system crash / freeze ... Also is the main on / off switch ok on the ignition lead ?

                        Looks about right; there's a few things I would change.

                        Mainly if you're gonna put a main kill switch, I'd put it on the power line from the battery, so that if it's off the computer won't turn on; it'd be like a valet switch. Having it on the IGN doesn't seem like it'd work properly in my mind. It would technically work, but just seems wrong for some reason.

                        The ACPI wires (green/black) will need to connect to your power switch of the laptop, and having that monetary switch placed in the dash(or somewhere you can access) would be a good idea. Though the ACPI has it's own black wire, so don't tap that into the main ground.

                            Sorry to bring up an old thread but my question pertains to doing exactly the above senario. No need for a new thread.

                            My issue is my HP Auto adapter specs an input voltage of 11-15v. I have the Carnetix 1900 that will only go as low as 18V. i was going to power the adapter through the 1900.

                            Will 18v likely toast the auto adapter or is there usually plenty of wiggle room on the specs of the auto adapter?

                              If you have the auto adapter, you don't need the Carnetix.
                              Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
